….And Still Undefeated !!!!
There are a lot of great teams in the 5th Region, but there isn’t one that’s made quite an impression like John Hardin. After 21-games, they are still undefeated and have played quite well, despite the loss of several key starters from last season. Head coach Jared McCurry did express some concern after a wild win over District foe Elizabethtown last week, but after an 83-6 win over Knox Central in the inaugural Kentucky 2-A Tournament, they appear to have taken his words seriously. Forward Alex Matthews led scorers with 22-points / 8-rebounds and the Bulldogs were 22-of-39 from the field. The 21-0 start has matched the longest winning streak in team history and has historians searching for the longest streak to start the season in the 5th.

Looking Good!
Although Elizabethtown is the favorite in the 5th Region Girls basketball minds, Bardstown has at least thrown their hat into the conversion as the team which might meet them in the Region final. Since losing their first game of the regular season to Marion County, head coach Amber Courtney’s Lady Tigers have put together 18-straight wins (until their recent loss to Eastern). Like John Hardin on the boys side, they can win many different ways and have been able to stay close to eventually close games out. Like the Bulldogs, the Lady Tigers still have a few more tests as the season nears it’s end with a second meeting with Bethlehem, Oldham County and Elizabethtown in February.

The Official Opinion!
If one thing came away from last nights NFL Championship games is that there is a need for expanded instant replay (especially in playoff games). Yesterday there were two flagrant calls which most definitely had a clear effect on who plays in Atlanta two weeks from now and after getting clarification (in the Saints instance, the official team admitted their fault) both should have been overturned. Obviously, this can simply be altered by allowing a challenge on any questionable call in the last two minutes because there are so many things at stake not to mention money and legacies especially when both games went to overtime. Just last year, there was a call which went against Jacksonville in their championship game against New England which took away a possible touchdown in a game which they lost. So when you watch the Patriots and the Rams in the Super Bowl in February, just remember, it could easily have been the Chiefs and the Saints instead.
