Scotties roll Carroll County, head to regional championship

GLASGOW — Nick Mitchell said it perfectly after Glasgow’s dominant win over Carroll County.

Glasgow has its eyes on another regional title, and the Panthers weren’t going to keep the Scotties from doing so.

The Scotties advanced to the regional championship game for the second straight season, controlling and dominating Carroll County 51-8.

“Overall, we played a good game,” Mitchell said. “I’m just proud of us, and we just gotta keep on advancing and win a regional championship.”

Mitchell’s coach agreed with that same assessment.

“I thought our boys came out and played well,” Glasgow coach Jeff Garmon said after his team’s win on Friday night. “I thought we played well in all facets of the game, and they took care of business.”

Taking care of business is right.

Mitchell ended his night early, and he deserved that reward. The junior led all Glasgow rushers with 17 carries for 153 yards and three touchdowns. Mitchell has seen a breakout season shine even further as he’s just 52 yards away from a 2,000 yard campaign.

Behind Alabama commit Tanner Bowles, Glasgow has one of the best offensive lines in the state. That notion was on display as Carroll County had no answer for Tanner Abernathy, Donatvis Oates, and Mitchell.

“Give credit to our offensive line,” Garmon said. “All of our guys. They block well for him and we had a lot of guys do a lot of good things. We’re blessed to have a great senior class, and they led us tonight.”

Mitchell acknowledge that same assessment as of his coach.

“I felt good,” Mitchell said. “They do it every week, so I can’t really complain at all.

“It was just a good win.”

Mitchell put Glasgow in a 7-0 advantage early in the first quarter with a one-yard punch into the end-zone. That short run was set up with a big play by Oates, who put his team in a position to score after a 12-yard run from the Panther 13-yard-line.

On the ensuing Glasgow drive — which was just its second of the game at that point — the Scotties were stopped short, but revived the drive after Ryan Jones took a fake punt for 30 yards, setting up a 12-yard touchdown Abernathy and giving Glasgow a 14-0 lead.

A trio of scoring drives, which were capped off with rushing scores from Mitchell and Oates, allowed the Scotties to take a 36-0 lead into the locker room.

Glasgow would end the game with a passing touchdown between Abernathy and Oates. A couple drives later, Mason Wilson put the finishing touches on Glasgow’s second playoff win this year with a two-yard score.

The first thing to do after a win for Glasgow coach Jef Garmon is celebrate the moment with his players and coaching staff. After all winning could easily be taken away.

After savoring the moment, it’s time to work.

“We’ll enjoy tonight, and we’ll start work tomorrow,” Garmon said. “We just gotta keep playing well in all three phases of the game: Take care of the football, block, tackle; that’s what football is all about.”

Glasgow faces Walton-Verona next Friday on the road.
