15th District Tournament Preview. Are You Ready?

It’s that time of year again. The regular season is beginning to wind down with many teams fighting to punch their tickets to BB&T and Rupp Arena. As the postseason begins to heat up, here are some things to keep in mind for the 15th District Tournament.
Boys
Seedings:
Barren County
Monroe County
Allen County-Scottsville
Glasgow
Barren Co. (16-14) vs. Glasgow (4-23)
Already having the advantage of playing as the home team, Barren County is no doubt the hottest team in the district right now. The Trojans hold a four-game winning streak going into the tournament and have swept all district opponents this season. Led by junior guard Jared Coomer, who is averaging 16.1 points per contest this season, Barren County looks to go in to one of the toughest region tournaments in the state with a little bit of fire power and a district crown.
On the flip side, Glasgow comes in to the 15th District Tournament searching for an identity. Three players have averaged double figures for the Scotties this season – Ben Hughes/14.9ppg, Nick Sorrell/14.1ppg, and Kobe Brents/11.4ppg. Despite this, Glasgow has rode a lackluster 4-23 record and has been swept in district play this season. If the Scotties can pull a big upset of Barren County in the first round, it should give them some hope and maybe some momentum to earn a district title.
Clay’s Prediction: Barren County 72, Glasgow 50
Monroe Co. (15-12) vs. Allen County-Scottsville (10-18)
After going 8-18 last season, Monroe County has seen a complete turnaround this season by earning 15 wins and have a 3-3 record in district play. The Falcons are led by the district’s leading scorer, junior guard Billy Michael Dyer, who is averaging 23.3 points per game this season, which gives them just as much of a chance as anyone to not only claim a district title, but to make a run in the region tournament as well.
Allen County-Scottsville has ridden a roller coaster season into the district tourney, but has seen some small improvements, going 10-18 after claiming only six wins last season. The Patriots are led by their guard combination of sophomore Brett Rippy (13.2 points per game) and senior Jack Ward (11.9 points per game). If the Pats can show up to play, they could possibly earn a win over Monroe County and have big momentum going into the tournament title game.
Clay’s Pick: Monroe County 63, Allen County-Scottsville 58
The 15th District Tournament will be played at Barren County High School. The first two games will be played on Tuesday, February 21st. Host team Barren County will play Glasgow at 6:00 followed by Monroe County vs Allen County-Scottsville at 7:30. The 15th District Championship Game will be played at Barren County High School on Friday, February 24th at 7:00.
Girls
Seedings:
Monroe County
Glasgow
Barron County
Allen County-Scottsville
Monroe Co. (27-2) vs Allen County-Scottsville (14-15)
Despite not being included in February 16th’s Courier-Journal Litkenhous Ratings, Monroe County is not only a clear favorite to win the Girls 15th District Tournament, but may also be the 4th Region favorite as well. The Lady Falcons have posted a 27-2 record this season, their only losses coming to Elizabethtown and region opponent Bowling Green. Monroe County is led by senior guard Raegan Turner, who is averaging 21.9 points per game. Senior guard Kelsey Johnson and senior forward Ashlee McGeorge are averaging 14.2 and 10.8 points per game, respectively.
Allen County-Scottsville has ridden a tough road this season, boasting a 14-15 record after going 25-5 just a year ago. Although sitting at the bottom of the district standings, the Lady Patriots do not plan to go down easily. After dropping a 53-49 decision to the Monroe County on February 3rd, ACS looks to avenge the loss with a big district upset. The Lady Pats are led by sophomore forward Sarah Sutton, who is averaging 18.3 points per game. Fellow sophomore forward Mason Towery is also averaging 14.0 points per game.
Clay’s Pick: Monroe County 66, Allen Co-Scottsville 63
Glasgow (25-3) vs Barren Co. (19-11)
This could be one of the more interesting matchups in this year’s 15th District Tournament. Although Glasgow has taken both matches in the regular season, the wins have only been by six points or less. This is also the only matchup in this year’s tournament (boys or girls)
Glasgow is hoping to defend their 15th District title. The Lady Scotties have played to the tune of a 25-3 record this season and could very well meet their district contender Monroe County in both the District and 4th Region tournament. Glasgow is led by senior guard Elli Bartley, who is averaging 14.5 points per game.
Host team Barren County has also rebounded after a losing season in 2015-2016 to pick up a 19-11 record. The Trojanettes have won three straight games and a big win over Glasgow could give them a boost going into the region tournament. Barren County is led by freshman guard Elizabeth Bertram, who is averaging 12.3 points per game. Senior guard Olivia Poynter is averaging 11 points per game for the Trojanettes.
Clay’s Pick: Glasgow 57, Barren County 50
Barren County will host the Girls 15th District Tournament. Monroe County and Allen County-Scottsville will play in the first game on Monday, February 20th at 6:00, followed by Glasgow vs Barren County at 7:30. The championship game will be played on Thursday, February 21 at 7:00.
