Outlook- A year removed from a 1-7 season under Jeremy Whitlow (the pandemic year), the Green County Dragons had a season to remember under new coach Colt Phelps. Going 11-2 and making some noise in the playoffs had plenty of people in Greensburg excited and looking forward to 2022 and with so many skill players returning there is lots of reasons to believe that it could get better.
Offense- The Dragons were very effective on the offensive side of the ball and it all starts with the Offensive Line with several starters back like Carson Scott and Mason Froggett as well as Gage Corbin, Ashtin Guenter along with Kolton Milby and Josh Lewis. The Dragons opened holes good enough for over 4011-yards rushing. Senior Blake Houchins was the top ground gainer with 1,320-yards and 18-TDs followed by junior Julian Seymour who had 1,099-yards and 13-TDs. Junior Kelson McKinney had 731-yards and 10-TDs and Zach Ferguson with 700-yards and 16-TDs. The guy under center will be Zach Ferguson, who threw for 405-yards and 2-TDs. The top receiver was Houchins with 6-catches for 123-yards and 1-TD and with Nathan Davis gone, Logan Slinker is next in line.
Defense– Like the Offense, the Defense was very smothering as well allowing just 177-points in thirteen games compared to 266 in eight in 2020. Phelps will have to fill some holes with graduations, but the Defensive Line which allowed just 1,226-yards on the ground will still return Kolton Milby. The Linebackers will still have Blake Houchins and the secondary will return Julian Seymour, Kelson McKinney, Zach Ferguson and Logan Slinker. The Defense had 22-tackaways last season (13-fumble recoveries/9-interceptions) and totaled 39-quarterback sacks.
Summation- With plenty of returning starters there is no reason why the Dragons can’t have a successful season in 2022. Obviously, there could be some questions on the Defensive side with the line and Linebackers, but if Phelps can fill some holes, the Dragons could be looking forward to playing deep into November this season.
