2024 Football Preview: Meade County Green Wave

                                                                         2023 Record: 5-6

                                                                  Head Coach: Larry Mofield

2023: After a 6-6 season in 2021, the Green Wave started fast in 2023, but then things began to fall apart as the season progressed. Football is a contact sport and injuries happen, but in this case it really impacted Meade County’s fortunes. After starting 5-1(their only loss was a one-point decision to Henderson County in the opener, the Green Wave began to stumble as the injuries impacted the team and suddenly ended the regular season being outscored 61-155 and then a fast exit in the playoffs to Trinity (Louisville). This season coach Larry Mofield hopes the continue the fast start despite several graduations to skill players on both sides.

Offense: The Green Wave started out scoring 198-points in their first six games (average of nearly 30-per game), but an injury to starting Quarterback Cade Scott (who was playing well) forced the Green Wave to go with Bennett Hobbs. Between the two, Meade County threw for nearly 2,000-yards and 19-TDs. With Scott returning for his senior season, the Green Wave will have several options in the passing game despite losing Ethan Brandon (23-catches) and Bennett Hobbs (15-catches). Branson Stull (39-catches – 412-yds-3-TDs) and Braden Mofield (20-catches-271-yds-2TDs) will be back as will Conner Cole (20-catches). The running game which has always been a staple of the Meade County Wing T attack will lose Hobbs (333-ys-4-TDs) and Stone Redmon, but will have Cruz Redmon (349-yds), Ethan Kaiser (210-yds) along with Wyatt Rainey and Fort Knox transfer RJ Wrenn as well. The OL will lose Eric Carman, but will return Baccer Robinson, Ethan Spencer, Jesse Beavin and Thomas Fox so Mofield will some stability there.

Kicking Game: Nolan Poole was 28-of-32 PATS and 3-of-4 FGs as he returns for his senior season.

Defense: The Green Wave did play better allowing just 331-points in eleven games in 2023 as opposed to just 351 in 2022 and there will be some changes on that side of the ball as well. The Defensive Line will lose Bryce Clark, Eric Carmen and Luke Newsom with Phoenix McCormack returning. The Linebackers will lose Stone Redmon, but return Ethan Kaiser and Thomas Fox, who led the team in Quarterback Sacks (4) and Wyatt Rainey, who led the defense with 54-tackles. The secondary, which picked off six passes was led by Braden Mofield and with Hobbs, Grant King and Aiden Millay gone, there will be several changes.

Summation: Last season was frustrating for Mofield and the team after a fast start, but this season could be a good one if several things go right. Meade County must not only stay healthy, but get a few breaks especially in a District which features powerful teams like St. Xavier and PRP.
