2025 Football Preview: Nelson County Cardinals

                                              Head Coach – Josh Boston

2024: Last season, under new coach Mike Rogers, the Cardinals took a step backwards with a two win season after seeing some progress under Phillip Stockdale. Now with the departure of Rogers after the season and the hiring of former Henderson County coah Josh Boston, it will be interesting to see if the transition will be smooth with several skill players gone from last year’s team.

Offense: The Offense scored 294 points, which was actually up a bit from the previous season (255), but the rushing totals were down significantly going from 2,758 in 2023 to 1,309 last season and Boston will turn his attentions to developing some more runningbacks with only Grant Cox and Kam Morley the only significant retunrees with over 100-yards rushing. The passing game should be stabile with Kam Morley returning after throwing for over 2,000-yards and 17-TDs through the air, however only senior Jacob Reynolds is returning so Boston will have to develop several others as well. The Offensive Line is still pretty young and there will be plenty of options with just a few (Landon Smith, Owen Kelly, Jason McClain) gone and lots of youth.

Kicking: Cooper Thompson was 25-of-34 on PATS and will be gone so junior Hagan Sims may be next in line as placekicker.

Defense: If any depatment suffered the most it was probably the defense which went from allowing 203-points in 2023 to 418 last year. Still, Boston will have plenty of returnees in all positions like DL where only Cooper Thompson is gone, but Dominic Rameriz, Xavier Lawson and Charles Stephenson are back. The Linebackers will return Jacob Reynolds and Jayson Cox will contribute. The secondary will have Ethan Kessinger, Noah Sekulski, Kam Morley and Grant Cox should contrubute to a defense that had 15-QB sacks and 16-fumble recoveries.

Summation: This will be the second straight season with a different head guy on the sideline, but Boston does have a pretty good pedigree from Henderson. With a little help and some luck this could go from a transition season to a return to glory 2025.
