Outlook: Despite leading by nine points at halftime and by seven with four minutes to play, Barren County trailed Somerset by two points with two minutes to play. Kaitlyn Elmore hit a reverse layup with 1:18 to play to tie the score, leading to her final act just over a minute later. With less than five seconds remaining, Elmore drove in from the left wing to hit a contested layup to give the Trojanettes a 48-46 victory. It was their fifth-straight win and further solidified their #1 ranking. This week the team hosts Franklin-Simpson on Tuesday before traveling to Bowling Green for two games this weekend – a road tilt with South Warren on Friday and a neutral game at South on Saturday against Breckinridge County.
2. Bowling Green 8-7 2
Outlook: Bowling Green’s three-game winning streak ended on Saturday in the Coin Flip Classic at Bullitt East as the Lady Purples dropped a 65-56 decision to Manual. Coach Calvin Head’s club was without Meadow Tisdale in the loss. LynKaylah James scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead BG. Ava Bennett knocked down four three-pointers to score 12, while Emma Huskey hit six free throws to also score in double-figures with 11 points. The Lady Purples have three games scheduled in Week 8 as they travel to Bethlehem on Tuesday night before hosting Russell County on Thursday and Wayne County on Saturday.
3. Greenwood 6-2 3
Outlook: Greenwood remains at #3 in our power rankings, but the team has not played since February 8. Coach Zach Simpson’s squad will look to get back into action this week with a home game on Tuesday against Christian County, a road district tilt with Warren Central on Thursday, and a home game with Owensboro on Saturday. Will the two-week layoff affect the Lady Gators? The last time the program missed two weeks’ worth of games was just last month. The team returned from its absence and tore off four-consecutive wins.
4. Warren Central 5-5 4
Outlook: Warren Central did not hit the floor in Week 7, but Coach Anthony Hickey’s squad will return in Week 8 with two home games. On Tuesday, the Lady Dragons will welcome Webster County to Dragon Gym before hosting Greenwood on Thursday in a game with district tournament seeding implications.
5. Metcalfe County 7-4 5
Outlook: Per the KHSAA’s website, the Metcalfe County Lady Hornets have four games scheduled for this week. A road game on Monday in Glasgow precludes three home dates with Hancock County (Tuesday), Caverna (Thursday), and Campbellsville (Saturday). One of the most prolific three-point shooting teams in the 4th Region, coach Tiffany Coffey’s club has three players moving in on 20 three-point field goals for 2021 – Braelyn Davis (19), Anna Blythe (18), and Kassady London (17).
6. Franklin-Simpson 8-5 6
Outlook: Franklin-Simpson is on the cusp of entering the top five of our rankings. It will have two solid chances this week to improve its resume as the Lady Wildcats travel to Barren County on Tuesday and host Glasgow on Thursday night. Sophomore forward Hadley Turner has become a reliable third scoring option for Franklin. She is averaging 8.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest.
7. Clinton County 7-5 10
Outlook: Clinton County defeated Campbellsville in its only game of the week by a score of 55-48. The Lady Bulldogs were led by Braylee Mann, who scored 19 points and reached 1,000 points for her high school career. She went 13-for-18 from the free throw line. Abbi Young scored 12 points on four three-pointers. Coach Ansley Nelson’s club is scheduled to host Lynn Camp on Friday and Allen County-Scottsville on Saturday.
8. Monroe County 6-5 8
Outlook: Monroe County failed to hit the floor this week due to the snow and ice storms hitting the surrounding area. The Lady Falcons are scheduled to play three games this week – a road game at Hart County on Monday, followed by home games with Cumberland County (Tuesday) and Warren East (Thursday). The team has not played a game since February 9.
9. Russell County 8-9 9
Outlook: As noted last week, the Lady Lakers have won four out of five games after losing five-consecutive games in late January. Coach Brett Blankenship’s club will seek to hit the hardwood three times in Week 8. RC will host Pulaski County on Monday, travel to Bowling Green on Thursday, and host Casey County on Friday.
10. Warren East 6-7 NR
Outlook: Warren East enters the rankings in Week 8 after beating South Warren, 59-57. The Lady Raiders have won three out of four, including a 16-point win over Franklin-Simpson. Coach Jenny Neville’s club nearly toppled #1 Barren County during this four-game stretch. Lucy Patterson scored 25 points in the win over the Lady Spartans, while Reagan Lawson hit five three-pointers to score 15 points.
