5th Region Girls and Boys Basketball Previews

5th Region Girls and Boys Basketball Previews

The 5th Region Girls Basketball Tournament will get started on Monday at Central Hardin with Campbellsville playing Nelson County at 6:00 and then Elizabethtown facing off against LaRue County in the nightcap at 8:00. The second portion of the first round will be a 6:00 tipoff between Bardstown and Marion County and then will follow up with Green County vs. John Hardin at 8:00. The winners will then meet on Friday evening with the winners from the Monday matchups at 6:00 and then the winners from Tuesday playing at 8:00. The Championship game will tipoff at 7:30 pm on Saturday Night for the opportunity to play on Wednesday Afternoon at 1:30 pm at BB&T Arena at Northern Kentucky University against the 4th Region Champion.

The favorite has to be Elizabethtown, who has actually played everyone in the field except LaRue County and Marion County and losing only to Bardstown.

Nelson County is the reigning Region Champion and lost a tough game to Bardstown in the 19th District Championship game and looks to be on a collision course if they win game one against the Lady Panthers.

In the other bracket, John Hardin could face Bardstown in the semi-finals if they can get past Green County. The Lady Tigers have put together a great season under Amber Courtney and should be a tough draw for anyone.

In the Boys Region Tournament which will be at Marion County, the action gets started on Wednesday Night with Bardstown playing Campbellsville at 6:00 and then the night cap will feature John Hardin vs. Caverna at 8:15 pm. The following night will feature LaRue County against Bethlehem at 6:00 pm and then to finish up the first round action will be Adair County vs. Central Hardin at 8:15 pm. The winners will meet on Monday with Wednesday’s winner playing at 6:00 pm and then the winners from Thursday night will meet in the 8:45 pm game with the winners playing at 7:00 pm on Tuesday Night with a chance to play on Wednesday March 14th at 8:00 pm against the Region 15 champion at Rupp Arena in Lexington, KY.

Plenty of storylines in the Region Tourney with Bardstown beginning to look like champions again after a slow start and with powerful John Hardin in the other bracket waiting for the winner it could be old home week for head coach James Brewer.

Caverna will face the Bulldogs and have one of the games most flamboyant scorers in Jobby Howard. It will be a good matchup against Mickey Pearson and Malik Wright in the first round of the Tournament.

LaRue County with their gaudy 27-2 record will face Bethlehem in the first round and if they are able to survive that game it might set up a possible matchup between either Adair County or Central Hardin in the semi-finals. Both Harmon Zion and Jacob Hobbs should put on quite a great showdown in the first round which could set the scoreboard flashing all night.
