Spartans State Bound, Pound Shelby County 36-6

The KHSAA 4A Semifinal matchup between undefeated South Warren and 12-1 Shelby County was the very definition of a question mark. Only one common opponent in John Hardin, and both teams beat the Bulldogs handily. The Rockets entered with 3,750 rushing yards and an impressive 520 points scored for the season. South Warren brought 4A’s best defense and one of the top units in the state.

While many expected the Spartan defense  to be the big matchup, what some failed to recognize was the SWHS offense. Ryder Litten’s first half was one for the ages, as he rushed for scores of 22 and 40 yards, and threw touchdowns to CJ Hayes and Bryan Cummings.

Both passes came in the final minute of the first half, as Hayes caught a fade route with less than ten seconds to play, then a squib kick mishandle led to a 25 yard strike to Cummings with 1.2 seconds on the clock. As the two teams jogged into the locker room, what was a potential 14-0 game had ballooned to 28-0.

Shelby County received the second half kickoff and the South Warren defense closed the door again, forcing a three and out. Litten would run for a nine yard score, and that would be more than enough to win the ballgame. The Rockets would find the end zone against the SWHS second unit. A running clock led to a quick evening and a 36-6 final.
Ryder Litten was named Bluegrass Cellular Player of the Game, finishing with five touchdowns on the night.
South Warren plays Johnson Central in the 4A State Championship Game next Sunday night. It is the first trip to the final for both schools.
STBN coverage from Smith Stadium at WKU begins at 6:45 PM.
