The Bowling Green’s boys and girls soccer programs had another outstanding 2015 season, both capturing the 4th region title.
On the boy’s side, defending state champions finished their season 19-3-3 advancing to the semi-finals before losing to Henry Clay 1-0. The team’s motto is “Excellence is worth the effort!” and both Head Coaches Widener and Girls Head Coach Lisa Correa walk the walk.
Coach Widener finished his 11th year as the Purples’ head coach and his 14th overall with the program. In 11 years at the helm, Coach Widener has led the Purples to a 209-36-21 overall record. During this time, the Purples have earned nine district titles, seven region 4 and section one championships, state championships in 2006/2014 and a semi-final state appearance in 2015.
Widener’s stats speak for themselves putting him among the top 6 winningest active coaches in the state of Kentucky. What’s even more impressive is that Widener success is over an 11 year span verses those ahead of him with 5 to 10 years of more coaching under their belts.
Widener is proud of the success of the team and attributes it to his players over the years “I have never scored a goal in a game” say Widener.
Even though Widener has never scored a goal, he has elevated the Purples soccer program to an elite status throughout the state of Kentucky and will go down as one of most successful Coaches in Kentucky state history.
You don’t have to look to far to find the one of the most successful girls soccer coaches in the state, Purples head Coach Lisa Correa.
Correa’s Lady Purples finished their 2015 season at 18-3-2 winning the 14th district and 4th region championship to advance to the semi-state. The Lady Purples first round match was against 2nd ranked Owensboro Catholic who went on to win the match before losing to Lexington Catholic in the semi-finals.
Coach Correa finished her 16th season as the head coach of the Bowling Green Purples. Coach Correa has led the Purples to nine district titles, nine region championships, and two elite eight and three final fours with an overall record of 279-67-24.
At the end of this season Coach Correa has moved into the 2nd active winningest girls’ soccer coach in the state of Kentucky. Correa moved past Ashland Blazer’s head coach E.B. Lowman who has been coaching for 22 years.
Coach Correa has achieved a milestone many years earlier than those before her, and has etched her name into the record books as well.
Whether you like the color Purple or not, there is no denying the success of these two programs and the coaches responsible for leading the way.
