Bowling Green traveled to Russell County on Tuesday night to take on the Lakers in a region showdown. Thanks to a 28-3 run in the first half, the Purples escaped with a 71-56 victory.
Russell County set the tone early by jumping out to a 9-5 lead early in the first quarter. The Purples began to press the Lakers and things got ugly from there. The press defense forced several turnovers which led to a 28-3 run. Terry Taylor caused problems for the Lakers all night and dominated inside, scoring 21 points. At halftime, Bowling Green led 43-25.
In the third quarter, senior guard Eddie Murphy dominated and slowly dug in to the Purples huge lead. Murphy and Junior Guard Kel Scotts combined for 47 points for the Lakers. However, the Purples maintained a 57-45 lead after three quarters. The Lakers repeatedly tried to get back into the game but never got the lead under 8 points. After the two teams went back and forth from the free throw line, the Purples ended up victorious by a final score of 71-56.
Terry Taylor led the Purples with 21 points and was named the player of the game. The Purples are now 14-2(3-0 district) and will play Warren Central friday night for the 1st place spot in the district.
