Bowling Green edges Logan County

The Girls 4th Region Tournament semifinals got underway Friday evening inside E.A. Diddle Arena on the campus of Western Kentucky University.

The night’s opening matchup featured Bowling Green taking on Logan County. The Lady Purples entered the contest at 27-4 overall while the Lady Cougars were 22-8 on the season.

Neither team wanted its season to end, but only one could advance to the championship.

That one squad would in fact be BG, as it defeated Logan County, 60-51 in front of a pretty solid crowd on John Oldham Court.

MarKiziah Mimms scored 17 points and Oneisha Turner dropped 12 points helping the Purples be victorious.

Bowling Green will play the winner of South Warren-Glasgow in the Girls 4th Region Tournament title game Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Things got going at 6 p.m. with the Lady Purples winning the opening tipoff.

Taleia Mason scored inside for Logan County to begin the game. Bowling Green recorded its first basket at the 5:51 mark of the first quarter on a MarKiziah Mimms and-one.

At the first timeout of the contest, the Lady Cougars led 7-3. The Lady Purples just couldn’t seem to find their rhythm yet.

Mason nailed a pair of free-throws to give LCHS an eight-point lead, but two BGHS scores made it 13-10 with 11.1 seconds remaining in the period.

The Lady Cougars attempted a shot right before the buzzer, but it rimmed out, ending the first quarter. After one, Bowling Green trailed Logan, 13-10. Mason had 6 points on 2-of-2 shooting and Mimms had five points.

Trailing 17-10 with 4:02 to play in the first half, Oneisha Turner grabbed a rebound and went coast-to-coast to lay it in to cut it to a five-point deficit for the Lady Purples.

Dejia Moore hit two free-throws for BG to make it 21-16 at the two-minute mark of the second quarter. Both clubs traded baskets following that with Nataia Martin nailing a 3 for the Purples and Cierra Johnson scoring inside for LCHS.

At halftime, Bowling Green trailed 23-21. Turner scored inside just before the break to give the Lady Purples some momentum heading into the locker room. Taleia Mason led all scorers with 8 points at intermission. BGHS went 7-of-26 from the field as LCHS wasn’t much better, going 10-of-28.

With 1:56 left in the third quarter, Bowling Green and Logan County were knotted up at 31-31. Martin hit a 3 from the wing to give the Purples’ its lead back at 37-34. Johnson matched it with one of her own for the Lady Cougars, though.

It was becoming a back-and-forth affair, and after three full quarters of action, Logan County held a two-point lead of 38-36 over BG. Cierra Johnson led all scorers with 12 points.

The final eight minutes would be one for the books.

Mimms nailed a three-pointer and then hit another one from the same spot to give the Lady Purples a 42-38 lead with 7:04 remaining. Mason scored inside to make it just a two-point Cougar deficit with 5:45 to go.

Trailing by two with 4:17 to play, Logan County called a timeout to try and get its momentum going again. The timeout didn’t really help, as Mason threw the ball away. Jessica Hines made up for the turnover with an easy lay-in.

Bowling Green began to take over with three-straight easy inside scores to take a 47-44 lead with just 1:29 to play. Mimms hit two free-throws to give her 15 points and her team a 49-44 advantage.

Logan County couldn’t get anything going at the end, and it would hurt them, as it helped give the Purples a 51-44 led with 1:01 to go. Bowling Green would hold that lead for that long, leaving with a “W.”
