For someone who hasn’t been at the Elizabethtown County Club very often, Elsa Moberly felt right at home when it counted. The girl who had finished up her freshman year at Mississippi State just finished off seventh-seeded Kaitlin Riley in the championship round on Friday to win the Kentucky Women’s State Amateur Championship at Elizabethtown with her third birdie in her five holes. Moberly won each of her tournament matches on the final three holes after facing different opponents on each day. Moberly, who played at Pulaski County and was Miss KY Golf in 2014 and was All State in 2012-2014 during her sophomore, junior and senior years and had three top five finishes at State admitted that this was her first trip to Elizabethtown’s Country Club to compete although she did play in last year’s version of the tournament at Danville.
Riley was this year’s NAIA national champion at the University of Cumberlands. It was also her first win in a major tournament. Meanwhile, former Elizabethtown high school’s Rebecca Black win the Consolation Bracket over Krissy Martin of Louisville on Friday. It was a great way to end the week after she was upset by Cynthia Powell in the first day, but won Tuesday and Wednesday to earn a spot in the Consolation Championship. Black focused on her putting Friday on the final two holes and after missing a one on Hole 17, but putted to within 4 feet on 18 and tapped in for the win. Black and her caddie, former teammate Lauren Hartlage walked away on the course that they had played on for so many years and now will move on to bigger things as Black will play at UNC-Asheville and Hartlage at Louisville. It was a nice way to finish out a steamy summer afternoon for both Moberly and Black.
