Warren East falls to Shelby County in State Farm Shootout opener

The annual State Farm Shootout on Saturday at South Warren High School began with Warren East taking on a Shelby County club from Region 8.

Coming off a 78-50 loss at District 14 rival Greenwood on Friday night, the Raiders would be looking to turn things around and return to their winning ways. That wouldn’t be the case, though, as Shelby County game out of the gates firing on all cylinders and held a lead from the buzzer to buzzer, winning 57-43.

Jordan Armstrong scored 12 points and Kyion Stone dropped 12 while Taurius Robinson added 12 of his own for Shelby County. In its loss, Warren East was led by Chauncey Greer’s 11 points.

The Rockets won the opening tipoff and quickly jumped out to an 11-0 lead over Warren East, who couldn’t seem to get anything going on either side of the ball early. However, the Raiders would respond by outscoring Shelby County 11-5 throughout the remainder of the first quarter and only trailed 15-11 heading into the second period.

In the ensuing quarter, Shelby doubled its total while East also added ten points to its side of the scoreboard to make it read 30-21 after one half of action. At the break, Chauncey Greer had 8 points to lead the Raiders while Kyion Stone paced the Rockets with 8 points of his own.

The game would continue to be low-scoring in the second half.

In the third, Shelby County scored just 10 points to Warren East’s nine and held a 10-point lead entering the final eight minutes, as the scoreboard read 40-30. The Raiders’ leading scorer TreQuon Patterson had a big period as he scored 8 points to keep his squad in the comeback area.

Although it was in the area, Warren East would continue to struggle in the final quarter and would be outscored 17-13 in its second-straight setback.
