A Look Back! 3rd Region Tournament: Meade County Comeback!

A Look Back: 3rd Region Tournament

What happened to the Green Wave? A team which started the season 8-1 and the due to injuries dropped 14 straight games including 19 of their last 20-games, then dropped the 11th District Championship game to Hancock County, 61-60. Then something happened. Meade County entered the 3rd Region Tournament as underdogs and defeated Edmonson County 54-43 in the first round in the Owensboro Sportscenter. The next game, the Green Wave slipped by Owensboro Catholic, 46-42 and behind senior James Baker’s 17-points and 6-rebounds. Suddenly, head coach Jason Trique found his team in the Championship game on Tuesday Night. A place many thought they’d never be and against a tough Daviess County team, played a marvelous game. It was a back and forth affair with the Panthers building a 26-21 halftime lead, but in the second half Meade County began to chip away when Chezney Weick’s putback of a Baker miss in the fourth quarter put the Green Wave up 42-40 with 5:30 left.  Then leading 50-47 with 00:21 left, Blake Boswell hit a three at the top of the key to tie it up, then Baker was fouled after a missed shot and sank both free throws to make it 52-50 and when sophomore Dakota Walden’s shot was wide it signaled the first Region Title for the Green Wave since their 5th Region Championship in 1984. It was done in such a strange way with the winless drought, but the team got healthy at the right time and found a way to find victory in a strange and fantastic season.
