Football Week One
With the beginning of ever high school football season are a few surprises and some that simply aren’t that. Elizabethtown started the season off with a tough loss last season in their opener and coach Mark Brown knew that could not happen again if the Panthers would entertain any chances of a perfect season. Against powerful Franklin Simpson that didn’t happen. With a team returning lots of talented seniors from last year, the Panthers turned a close game into a laugher and struck the first shot across the football landscape with a 55-23 win. The deal breaker was a big 34 – 7 second half explosion fueled by 251-yards rushing by the Becherer brothers (Joseph and Jay) and combined for four touchdowns. The Panthers first four games looked tough, but after this blowout win, the rest of the Region might want to keep a watchful eye.
Meade County was also involved in a blowout, but unfortunately they were on the wrong side as a strong Simon Kenton team pushed across six touchdowns in the first half and cruised to a 47-13 loss. Coach Larry Mofield shouldn’t feel too bad as many of the Pioneers opponents will understand that feeling this season.
North Hardin traveled to Western Kentucky to take on the State Champion Bowling Green Purples and discovered what so many teams have for the last several seasons that they can beat you fast and quick. Bowling Green took two plays to score their first touchdown and eventually built a 29-0 halftime lead in an eventual 42-7 loss.
John Hardin fell hard in the first game of the Chris Engstrand era to Boyle County, 41-6 and that should set up quite a matchup against North Hardin the following week.
Central Hardin found themselves tied with Clarksville Northeast going into the fourth quarter before getting a couple of touchdown runs from Jacob Hobbs to pull out a 34-20 win.
Finally LaRue County started the new Josh Jaggers’ era with a huge 49-8 win over Marion County behind 333-yards rushing and six touchdowns on the ground Bryson Cobb’s four touchdowns.
