Perhaps the BIGGEST surprise in the area in this season’s football world might be the LaRue County Hawks. Their 6-0 record might come as a surprise to some, but to head coach Josh Jaggers it probably didn’t. Since coming back fir his second stint with the team, he inherited a senior dominated squad with plenty of skill players in all the right places. Last week’s 45-6 win over Adair County was a perfect example as the Hawks used their usual formula to victory which means grinding it out, getting a quick lead and then just forcing you to crawl out of the hole quickly. LaRue County built a 45-0 lead after two quarters and half around the 126-yards rushing by Bryson Cobb, who had four running touchdowns, Quarterback Dane Milby’s effective and moderate passing (he was 3-7-139-yards and a touchdown) and a defense that smothered the Indians limiting them to just 92-total offensive yards.
Meanwhile John Hardin found themselves in a REAL pickle in Brandenburg. They trailed 20-14 going into the fourth quarter, which suddenly became 28-14 when C.J Hylander caught a touchdown pass from Zane Powers. Really needing a character changing game to turn their season around they GOT IT! What happened afterwards defied description as they scored three unanswered touchdowns and finalized a HUGE 35-28 come from behind win. It all really started when Anthony Witherspoon scored on a 77-yard run with about nine minutes and a half to make it 35-21 followed by Steven Livers 23-yard scoring catch from Justin Russell about four minutes afterwards. Then Russell finished it off with a 9-yard pass to Witherspoon with 1:12 left for a BIG 35-21 win. Maybe the Bulldogs turned their season around against a HOT Green Wave team.
Thomas Nelson almost did. After trailing 20-0 to Bardstown, a team which they had NEVER beaten during their inception suddenly found themselves closing in when they scored twice in the second half to close from within 20-14 and then after stopping the Tigers on their next offensive possession found themselves near the Bardstown 20-yard line facing a fourth and one. The Generals were stopped cold and Bardstown ran the clock out to preserve the win, but head coach Kyle Boblitt’s team threw quite a scare into their crosstown rivals.
Game of the Week: Bethlehem @ LaRue County – The 1-A Eagles are going through a transition period under new head coach Jesse Cantrall and really need a win over the Hawks which really won’t be easy. Bethlehem is allowing a little over 200-yards rushing and LaRue County’s strength is running the ball with over 1,600 a lot of that coming from Bryson Cobb with 810 (averages 135 a game) and 15 trips in the end zone. The Hawks defense is allowing only one touchdown a game so if the Eagles don’t get rolling early it will be a long night for Bethlehem once Cobb gets his hands on the ball.
