The Case for Breckinridge County Volleyball

The Case for Breckinridge County Volleyball

It was a long night and the Breckinridge County Volleyball team seemed to have everything under control against District Arch Rival Meade County. They had won the first two games against the athletic Lady Waves, but head coach Barry Mingus knew that the match wasn’t won until the Lady Tigers finally closed out the final game of the best-of-five series. Then just like that Meade County answered by winning the next two games and forcing a deciding game five. This seemed to be the same script that ran just September 5th in Brandenburg when the Lady Tigers won game one and rallied in game four, but came out flat in game five losing 15-4.

That was not about to happen this time if Abby Tivitt had something to say about it. The senior came up with five straight points on the service line thanks to the splendid play of her teammates and finally closed out the fifth game 15-6. Evidently Breckinridge County learned from their failures the previous time and the win helped spur the continuation of a six-game winning streak.

So how does a team which won 21-games last season already exceed that early in October? Well, senior experience helps. The Lady Tigers have experience, youth and senior leadership all in the right places. Of the four seniors on this year’s team, (last year there were six) all have a different dynamic. Tiffany Chaney and Abby Tivitt are experienced front line players and are quick at the net. Abby Adcox comes off the bench and is a good passer, while Taylor Hines, who played organized volleyball in Louisville until moving to Breckinridge County is like the point guard and calls out defensive signals.

” MY three best friends on the team are Abby, Tiffany and Taylor and when they started killing it I got just as excited as everyone on the team.” said Adcox, while also gave great credit to the youth on the team in sophomore’s Peyton Whitworth, Halle Barr and Tessa Allen along with 8th grader Audrey Whitworth. “The two sisters play club ball and it will just be so much fun to see this team during their senior years.”

Like most teams that are contenders, the Lady Tigers may not have a lot of height, but all of their players play like six footers and have excellent leaping ability.

Last year’s team was derailed in the second round of the 3rd Region Tournament by Apollo, but this season, the dynamic on this team doesn’t believe that will happen. Still, there are a few challenges left in Meade County, Apollo and possibly Trinity Whitesville.

Still, after the team’s first loss to Meade County in which the Lady Tigers played hard, but simply ran out of steam nobody walked off the floor demoralized. There will always be a next time for this team.

As Peyton Whitworth said afterwards, “We have the team.”

Well said.
