5 Takeaways from Week 3 in Football
1. Raider Attack – After two seasons under head coach Chad Griffin, the Hart County football team had suffered through some rough times winning just five games during that time and posting just one win after their first three games in consecutive seasons, but this season could be different. The Raiders are currently 2-1 and after a 56-0 loss to Taylor County in week one have pounded out two straight wins and scoring 75-points in the process. Although Griffin tried to bring a variation of the Wing-T offense which he ran as an offensive coordinator during his time at Central Hardin, the Raiders do run the ball quite well, with four runners near 200-yards after three weeks of play and quarterback John Shoulders runs a controlled attack whie the defense has been under control much of the time.
2. AIR RAID EAGLES – It may be early to tell, but Bethlehem does seem to like throwing the ball. Despite losing a tough game to Hart County last week, the Eagles have shown that they are not shy about putting the ball in the air. Against Campbellsville the previous week, quarterback Ryan Mattingly put the ball up 36-times and against Hart County last week threw it 49-times completing 30 for 273-yards. So far their top receivers is Clay Trusley with 14-catches for 250-yards and three touchdown catches while Mason Tucker has 16 for 209 and one score.
3. Trojan Trumph – After losing a tough game to Northeast (Clarksville) TN, the North Hardin Trojans have rebounded quite well outscoring their two opponents 65-19 playing good football in the process. North Hardin followed up their shutout win over John Hardin with a tough hard fought win over powerful Elizabethtown, 34-19. That was a game in which quarterback Eric Moore for three touchdown passes. Two covering 44 and 77 in the first half. Also, the Trojan defense has played much better and despite allowing 247-yards on the ground against E-Town came up with the defesive stops during crunch time.
4. BREAK UP THE COUGARS! – Yes. It may be a bit too early to predict an undefeated season for the Grayson County Cougars, but several seasons of rebuilding years under longtime head coach Ed Smart, it was refreshing to see them go on the road and soundly beat Edmonson County 42-12. The win put them at 3-0 and much of that has to do with a defense which has allowed only 18-points in three games. On the other hand, quarterback Noah Bullock has showed great poise running Smart’s Wing-T attack which has put up over 700-yards running and the lead back has been Derrick Ruth with 336-yards and two-scores.
5. HOLD THAT TIGER! Bardstown looks like a serious contender in Class 3-A and after their 20-6 win over Marion County, they look very impressive in David Clark’s offensive attack. The Tigers, after a rough 2017 in which they lost their first two games, won their next three and then injuries sent them in a tailspin to a 3-7 season. This time around the offense seems to be running very effective with Clarks powerful stable of backs and an defense which has allowed only 25-points in three games.
