BGHS BOYS LEAVE LITTLE DOUBT/WIN BIG IN OPENER 65, BARREN COUNTY 40

The Purples, last year’s KHSAA Region 4 runner-up, wasted little time taking the attack to the outmanned Trojans.

Mason scored 25 points and BGHS point guard Turner Buttry finished with 17 as the Purples maintained a comfortable lead throughout. Barren Central’s Aden Nyeken led the Trojans with 17 points.

“I was pleased with our defensive effort for about 75 percent of the game,” BGHS coach D.G. Sherrill said. “Offensively, we’re still working on a lot of things. We’ve had the two COVID-19 lockdowns, plus limited practice time. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

BGHS backup forward Jordan Dingle, who is headed to the University of Kentucky on a football scholarship, helped the Purples rule the boards, and Sherrill got every player on his bench into the game.

The Purples are waiting on returning starter Conner Cooper, who had wrist surgery in December after guiding BGHS to the KHSAA Class 5A football title.  Cooper and Mason said Bowling Green is a work in progress, but they were happy with the team’s effort.

“We’ve got a lot of players in new roles,” Mason said, “and we preach team defense. We’ve just got to go out and play hard, defensively, and take care of business.”
