2024 Football Preview: Green County Dragons

                                                                        2023 Record: 10-3

                                                                   Head Coach: Colt Phelps

2023: The last three seasons under Colt Phelps have three of the best for Green County football as the team as went 28-9 and several deep runs in the KHSAA Football playoffs. In fact, last season the team put up big numbers on offense with a senior led team. This season will be quite a change as Phelps will lose plenty of experience but will still return lots of starters on both sides of the ball for another run.

Offense: The Dragons roared plenty on offense scoring 435-points in thirteen games and despite losing some key starters, they should be ready to push for another successful season. Houston Hodges will be back for his senior year under center after throwing  for 2,034-yards and 18-TDs against just 7-interceptions. The running game will lose two thousand yard runners in Kelson McKinney and Julian Seymour, but Gage Bale, Massiah Shively and Darius Anderson should pick up the slack. Eli Bishop and Kelson McKinney graduated after catching 80-passes between them as did Julian Seymour (33-catches) and Caleb Scott. Massiah Shively will be back and Phelps will look for more guys to throw the ball to. The Offensive Line will lose Koltyn Milby and Carson Scott, but Isaac Bradshaw, Andrew Houk and Weston Wright will be back.

Kicking Game: With Jake Bishop gone, the Dragons will look for another kicker.

Defense: The Green County defense did a great job allowing just 261-points in thirteen games and they will lose a few skill players as well. The Defensive line lost Koltyn Milby and Carson Scott, but will return Andrew Houk, so Phelps will look for replacements. The Linebackers will return Massiah Shively, Cole Kessler and Justin Hessig so they should be strong. The defensive backs will lose Julian Seymour, who led the team with 35-tackles and intercepted 8-passes. Jake Bishop will also be gone, however Austin Squires and Gage Bale will return.

Summation: There’s no question that the Dragons have had a great three year run under Phelps and the biggest question will be “Is it Over?” or “Just Continuing?” Success is always difficult and the best teams always have one or two off seasons. Like Hart County which is also in the middle of a run, only time will tell, but at least this season should have plenty of to smile about during football season.
