Toyota of Bowling Green Scholar Athlete: Bowling Green Lady Purples standout combines elite volleyball accomplishments, a 4.0 GPA, and a passion for giving back to the game.
For Bowling Green High School senior JoEllen Marshall, success has never been limited to what happens on the volleyball court.
A standout in both indoor and beach volleyball, Marshall has built an impressive athletic résumé while maintaining a 4.0 GPA, ranking eighth in a class of 306, and accumulating 39 college credit hours entering her senior year. Her combination of athletic achievement, academic excellence and leadership has made her an example of what it means to be a true scholar-athlete.
Those who know Marshall describe her as determined, hardworking and dedicated—a natural leader who sets the standard for her teammates both on and off the court.
A Leader on the Court
Marshall has been a three-time starter and captain for Bowling Green High School Volleyball and an eight-time captain with the nonprofit Barren River Area Volleyball Organization (BRAVO).
She has lettered three times at Bowling Green and earned 4th Region All-Region First Team honors twice. During her high school career, the Lady Purples have captured two district championships and two regional championships while making two trips to the Elite Eight.
Her individual accomplishments extend well beyond the region.
Marshall was named to the St. Louis Presidents Day Volleyball Tournament All-Tournament Team and has been ranked as high as 17th in Kentucky in her class by Prep Dig and fourth among setters in her class.
During her junior year, she was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Phenom Watch List. She also earned recognition on the 2025 JVA Watch List presented by VKTRY and the 2026 JVA Beach Watchlist, along with participation in Beach NTDP.
One of her most impressive statistical accomplishments came as a setter. Marshall reached No. 1 on the MaxPreps/KHSAA leaderboard in assists among Kentucky players in the Class of 2027. At her personal best, she ranked seventh in Kentucky across all graduating classes and 42nd nationally.
Excellence in the Classroom
As impressive as Marshall’s volleyball résumé is, she places the same expectations on herself academically.
A 4.0 student, Marshall has made the All-A Honor Roll every year and earned KHSAA Academic All-State First Team honors each year. She began accelerated mathematics in seventh grade and participates in Bowling Green High School’s Gifted and Talented Program.
Marshall has also been recognized with the AP Scholar Award in 2025 and 2026, is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars and has been named to Western Kentucky University’s President’s List.
She enters her senior year with 39 college hours through AP and dual-credit courses and hopes to graduate high school with approximately 51 college credit hours already completed.
Her academic achievements have resulted in invitations to educational programs associated with institutions including Stanford, George Mason, Lipscomb, Alabama and Harvard Student Agencies. She has also participated in Beta Club, Key Club, Girl Up, FBLA and FCA and is a participant in Kentucky’s Governor’s Scholars Program.
Taking Her Game to the Sand
While Marshall has accomplished plenty on the traditional volleyball court, her future may be on the sand.
She plans to attend a four-year university and pursue the opportunity to play collegiate beach volleyball, with in-state possibilities including Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky University while also considering programs outside Kentucky.
Academically, Marshall plans to study accounting and potentially add a minor. With many general education requirements already completed, she hopes to accelerate her undergraduate education and eventually pursue a master’s degree.
And wherever college takes her, Marshall wants volleyball to remain part of her life—not simply as an athlete.
She hopes to continue working with BRAVO or another volleyball organization through coaching, lessons and volunteer work.
Volleyball Is a Family Affair
Marshall’s connection to the sport goes beyond school and club competition.
She serves as a co-director of the Marshall Madness Grass Volleyball Tournament, an event that has grown during its 27-year history to become part of the USAV Grass National Tour. This year’s tournament drew approximately 2,000 people, and Marshall hopes to continue working alongside her family to help the event grow.
That commitment may best illustrate what separates Marshall as a student-athlete. Volleyball has provided her with opportunities, friendships and accomplishments, but she is already thinking about how she can give something back to the sport.
Whether she’s setting up a teammate for a point, preparing for another college-level course or helping introduce the next generation to volleyball, JoEllen Marshall continues to lead by example.
For this Bowling Green Lady Purple, the goal isn’t simply to succeed in one area. It’s to make the most of every opportunity in the classroom, on the court and in the community.
