The Greenwood Gators fell to 5-4 on the young season Wednesday night, after falling to the Bowling Green Purples by a score of 3-1 on Aaron Fletcher Field.The Purples drew first blood in the top of the 2nd, when Greenwood starter Sam Dralle walked a pair of Bowling Green hitters with two outs, and Purples right fielder Justin Gentry singled into right field to drive home Hunter Rogers from second base.
The game would remain scoreless, on both sides, until the top of the 6th, when Gators head coach Jason Jaggers brought in Michael Justice in for relief. Justice allowed a lead off double and a walk in his first three batters he faced, and again, Gentry would strike with two outs, this time, driving home Joseph McIntyre. The following batter, leadoff hitter Jackson Gooding, then drove in Hunter Rogers to give the Purples a 3-0 advantage.
The Gators rallied for a run in the bottom half of the 6th, an inning which saw shortstop Drew Hayles lead off with a base hit, Noah Edmonson knock a one out single, and it was capped off by a two-out single from Taylor Purdue to knock Hayles home. BG then made a pitching change, and a controversial call at first base involving Bryce Spalding, in which it seemed apparent that he had beaten out an infield single, was called out, and put a dagger in the Gator threat.
Greenwood went down in order to end the game, and give the Purples the first two games of the three game series.
The third game will be played today, again at Greenwood High School. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
