Week 11 Mega Matchup Football Weekend

With the postseason beginning next week, region teams face major tests outside of their district in the regular season’s final week

By Perry Swack

Although playoff matchups are set, the 2014 high school football regular season has one week remaining.  And what a week it will be.  District schedules commenced last Friday leaving the season’s final weekend open to some of the best games in the Bluegrass.  Of the eleven games featuring 4th Region schools, seven will feature at least one team ranked in its respective class.  Five of those seven games will feature both teams ranked in their respective classes.  Local teams will travel from Hopkinsville to Fort Campbell to Somerset and everywhere in between.  We’ve got you covered as we take a look at the football games to be played during “Mega Matchup Weekend.”

5A #1 Bowling Green Purples (8-1) @ 5A #4 Pulaski County Maroons (8-1)

Friday, October 31 @ 6:30pm Bowling Green

Had the Maroons not been blanked by Southwestern 14-0 last week, the rematch of the 2013 5A championship game would have been between #1 and #2.  However, a loss by Pulaski County to the newly-anointed #2 Warriors has dropped the Somerset school to #4 in Class 5A.  Nevertheless, the matchup between the Purples and Maroons is sure to be a good one.  Quarterback Riley Hall has missed the last two games for Pulaski County after being injured in a victory at Madison Southern and by all accounts will miss the tilt with the Purples.  Can backup George Gregory put on a performance like he did in a win over South Laurel (221 rush yards, 5 TDS & 226 pass yards, 3 TDs)?  It will be tough against the Purples’ famed “Jungle D”.

Number You Need To Know

50

The Purples have won fifty-consecutive games against in-state opponents.  Coach Kevin Wallace and his squad look to make the Maroons #51.

Prediction

Bowling Green 38, Pulaski County 14

I fully expect the Purples to come out and dominate from the outset.  If the Maroons had Hall, it might be a closer game, but Bowling Green is still hungry after the McCallie loss and will refuse to be denied.

4A #1 Highlands Bluebirds (7-2) @ 5A #3 Warren Central Dragons (6-3)

Friday, October 31 @ 7:00pm DSC_0803 (1280x914)

Last season’s Highlands-Warren Central game was one to remember.  A frantic comeback by the Dragons nearly gave them a victory but the Bluebirds were able to hold on for a 71-69 win.  The 2014 edition of the rivalry brings some new spice to the table as former Highlands’ wide receiver Jensen Feggins takes on his former team in his new town of Bowling Green.  Having first-year head coach Howard Feggins on the Central sidelines will certainly add to the game’s intensity.

Numbers You Need To Know

2 Receptions, 86 Yards, 2 TDs

This was Jensen Feggins’ line a season ago when the two teams met up.  However, the now-Dragon wore royal blue in that game.  He’ll don the navy this week and hope his numbers look similar, if not better, as the Dragons look to build some serious momentum before the postseason.

Prediction

Highlands 48, Warren Central 41

I don’t expect the score to resemble a basketball game as it did last year; however, I expect both offenses to have outstanding nights.  Highlands is averaging right at 40 points per game and Warren Central is a shade under 33.  Look for both teams to score near their averages.
