Dragons Down Purples in OT

By Jason Martin (GoDragonNation.com):

The Bowling Green-Warren Central rivalry added a new wing to its museum of basketball history on Friday night at WCHS as it would take overtime to decide the first meeting of 2015 between the two perennial behemoths. Stunningly, Bowling Green, in a game that was extremely tight throughout outside of a brief ten point lead for the Dragons, never led. They tied it in the second half and a Logan Riehn tip in would send it to OT, but they couldn’t quite get over the hump.

It was physical, it was emotional, it was draining, but it was fantastic. In OT, behind 23 points from Jared Savage and the best game of Kobe Caldwell’s fine career for WIlliam Unseld, the Dragons would have just enough to edge out a game Purples club 64-58. Round 2 should be incredible…and we’ll have every dribble for you on STBN.

FINAL: WC 64, BG 58

Lady Dragons fall to Lady Purples.

To call the renewal of the rivalry between the Purples and the Dragons on the hardwood a physical affair would be an astonishing understatement. It was aggressive from moment one of the girls game, with both teams struggling from the floor in the first half. Warren Central shot just 7-28, despite leading at the end of the first quarter. Bowling Green was just 6-22, including a 1-11 start from the field. At the half, in a defensive battle the likes of which very few get to see on this level of high school basketball, Lavonda Johnson’s club led the game by 2 at 19-17.

The second half would be just as intense and the defense just as staunch. Warren Central would have its chances but just didn’t make enough open looks. Bowling Green escaped 44-40.

FINAL: BG 44, WC 40
