For as long as I’ve been covering the Purples (and probably long before that), the game after fall break was always Warren Central. Now with Central playing in 4A, the Purples had to look to a new district opponent to fill the void. Enter Barren County, a squad in their first year under Coach Jeff Griffith, a former Defensive Coordinator for the Purples.
After Bowling Green went three and out on the first drive, the Purples D forced a fumble to give to ball back to Clark Payne and Company. A few plays later, Bowling Green would get on the board with a 22 yard run from Jamale Carothers. But then the rust from Fall Break played a factor, and Barren County’s offense would stay on the field for much of the first half. The Trojans would never score though, and after a couple more TD runs from Carothers, the Purples led 21-0 at the break.
The second half started with a fumble on the kickoff, with the Purples recovering. Carothers would capitalize with his fourth TD of the night moments later. Bowling Green’s defense had figured out the Trojan offense by the second half, and limited their run game significantly after taking a big lead. Clark Payne would two touchdown tosses in the third quarter, the first a 38 yard strike to Justin Gentry. The second, a beauty of a pass up the seam to Deangelo Wilson, got the running clock in motion. Barren County would get on the board with a 13 yard run from Zach Sneed. The Purples would answer with a nice drive, culminating in a Beau Buchanan to Brice Deglow TD connection. Final score, Bowling Green 48, Barren County 7.
