Lasley Leads Lady Spartans, Stacker Leads Spartans to Big D-14 Win

Last week was a tough one for Blane Embry and the South Warren Lady Spartans, facing two district opponents and also playing one of the top teams in the state on the weekend. They ended the week 1-2 after a difficult loss to Bowling Green and a bigger defeat to Elizabethtown. On Tuesday night, it was two win Warren East on the docket, a 2-17 team that had beaten exactly one school this year, Fort Campbell.

Early it was South Warren, and late it was also South Warren. The first quarter ended at 27-8 following eight point performances from Amaya Lasley and Deanna Taylor. The second quarter featured much more of the same and the Lady Spartans got a nine point burst from Zayana Bailey, who hit three in a row from beyond the arc. At the half, it was 47-15 and a running clock followed within the first two minutes of the second half.

The second half showcased several reserves, particularly Kaitlyn Conley who hit a pair of threes and finished with ten points. The starters played somewhat sparingly, opening up both the third and fourth quarters, but taking a seat shortly thereafter.
The game quickly concluded with a dominating 78-28 finishing score, the 17th win of the season for Coach Embry’s club. Zayana Bailey was named Bluegrass Cellular STBN Player of the Game as her 11 points were the more unexpected ones, and her defense was stellar.

FINAL: South Warren 78, Warren East 28
SW: Lasley 15, Taylor 12, Bailey 11
WE: Wardlow 9

South Warren won its first district game of the boys basketball season on Friday night at Greenwood and looked to finish the regular season D-14 slate with back-to-back victories. The opponent was Warren East, and early, the Spartans seemed ready, starting quickly and jumping out to a six point lead and an eight point advantage late in the second quarter.

Warren East fought back to tie the game at 27 with just over two minutes to play in the half, and the game would remain tied at 31-31 entering the break. One of the stories in the first half was the lack of offense for Mackenzie Strange, who found himself in foul trouble and couldn’t get into a rhythm.

The Spartans opened slowly in the second half and fell behind, eventually trailing by seven in the fourth quarter. But, down the stretch, the Spartans fought hard and extended the game in the final minute with fouls. Kaleb Britt missed the front end of a one and one and then Patrick Satterfield did the same.
Dayton Gumm cut the lead to one with a layup and then, in as dramatic a finish as it gets, he was fouled with 1.2 seconds left. South Warren trailed by 59-58 at that point. Gumm buried the tying free throw and even after a Combs full timeout, swished the second.
Patrick Satterfield attempted a half-court heave in time, but missed as South Warren wins an enormous game on the road, 60-59.
Brandon Stacker was named Bluegrass Cellular STBN Player of the Game. He finished with a monster night, scoring 22 points and 13 rebounds. His team needed every single one of them.
After beginning the season 0-6 in district play, the Spartans win two in a row, which may provide momentum heading into the D-14 Tournament. Up next, however, is a showdown with a good Franklin-Simpson team on Thursday night.
FINAL: South Warren 60, Warren East 59
SW: Stacker 22, Gumm 14, Smith 9, Beckham 9
WE: Kaleb Britt 22, Carter 11, Strange 11
