After a two-week tryout process, 21 young ladies were selected last Friday as Allen County-Scottsville cheerleaders for the 2013-14 school year.
The cheerleaders include seniors, Jamie Bagwell, Keeley Brown, and Shea Tomes. Juniors making the squad are Sydney Blankenship, Michael Ann Burris, Avery Coleman, Sara Dinkins, Kendra Silvano and Katie Simmons.
The sophomore cheerleaders for the upcoming year are Bailey Brown, Murphy Burris, Kirby Clark, Jacey Graves, McKenzie Grissom, Melaina Natcher and Kaylee Ragland. Freshman on the squad include Mariah Brown, Alex Carter, Kelly Dye, Haley Harper and Jelaina Wheeler.
The selections were made based on several guidelines which evaluated the girls in multiple areas.
“The girls were scored on cheer techniques, spirit/voice, dance rhythm, jumps and tumbling,” explained Coach Melanie Harston. “We have been working the past two weeks learning material and out of town KAPOS/KHSAA judges were brought in to score on Thursday and Friday. The girls also had to be KHSAA academic eligible to participate.”
The selections allow the AC-SH cheerleading program to begin work for next year.
“Right now, we will continue with gymnastics and stunting,” Harston added. “We will soon start working on football material, decide on camp plans and do lots of conditioning. We will start work on our competition material in July since we will compete in the KHSAA region cheer competition two months earlier next year than last year. Cheerleading is a year round sport.”
The AC-SH cheerleaders are coached by Melanie Harston and assisted by Ann-Kathryn Landers and Leslie Hanner. Tom Jones assists with choreographer and gymnastics.
