ACS rolls to 48-7 win over Barren Co.

The Allen County-Scottsville Patriots continued their success on Friday evening with a considerable 48-7 win over Barren County.

The victory marked the first time that the Patriots have started 2-0 since the 2010 season.

Senior quarterback Chase Wilson led the Patriots’ charge, completing 18-of-26 passes for 280 yards and five touchdowns, the second straight game that the senior has completed five or more touchdown passes.

“It feels great to be back,” said Wilson, who suffered a season-ending leg injury last year. “It seems like it has been forever since I’ve been on the field and now I am back in the swing of things, and it couldn’t be going better for me honestly.”

“He’s getting more comfortable each week,” said Allen County-Scottsville coach Brad Hood. “It’s great for him because I know how hard he worked to get back. A lot of kids would not have been ready to go the first week of the season, but he never lost focus and he worked his tail off to get back.”

With Allen-County Scottsville (2-0) leading 6-0, Barren County was able to pull in front briefly, a 44-yard touchdown reception by Jamarcus Miley giving the Trojans a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The remaining three quarters belonged to Allen County-Scottsville.

The Patriots pulled back in front with a 21-yard touchdown reception by junior wide receiver Cayden Ross after facing a long third-and-goal at the Trojans’ 21 yard-line, and ACS would rattle off 20 more points before the intermission, taking a 34-7 lead into the locker room.

Barren County (0-2) quarterback Dalton Ford’s pass was tipped and intercepted by senior Steven Whitney of the Patriots on the first play from scrimmage to start the second half, and ACS capitalized on the short field with a 3-yard touchdown run by Ross to extend the lead to 41-7 at the 10:03 mark of the third quarter.

The ACS defense forced yet another interception on the ensuing Trojan possession before capping the drive off with a 13-yard scoring strike to senior Sheldon Peay to ultimately make the final score 48-7, neither team scoring in the final quarter of play.

Junior Jacob Lightfoot led the Patriots’ receiving core with 8 receptions for 149 yards and two touchdowns, while senior running back Carson Taylor added 59 yards on three receptions, one of which was a 50-yard score right before halftime.

The ACS defense put together yet another impressive performance, holding Barren County to 130 yards of offense and forcing three turnovers (two interception, one fumble recovery). The Patriots are also yet to give up more than seven points in a game this season.

“Our defense gets after you,” said Hood. “I’ve told (the defense) that they would have to carry us for a while until the offense gets running smoothly. But overall, I was very pleased with the effort.”

Allen County-Scottsville will look to stay undefeated next Friday night as they travel to Greenwood. The Gators narrowly defeated the Patriots by a score of 35-27 last season.

Meanwhile, Barren County will look to pick up its first win of the season against Adair County at Lindsey Wilson College.
