BG takes Game 1 over Greenwood behind Dennis’ two HRs

Trevor Dennis had his bat working Monday afternoon.

In the first of a three-game District 14 series against Greenwood, the Bowling Green third baseman went 3-for-4 – including two homeruns – with four RBI.

The Purples (13-8, 5-2 District 14) finished with 10 hits on the day while Dennis’ two-run shot in the second inning put the Gators away early. On the mound for BG, Tyler Stahl pitched six innings and finished with 10 strikeouts to move to 5-0 on the season.

Greenwood trailed 7-1 after four complete frames. It would have two runners cross throughout the remainder of the contest, but it wouldn’t be enough for a comeback.

Jack Blair went 2-for-4 for the Gators (12-10, 3-3) while John Hicks finished with two hits and the team’s only RBI. Starting pitcher Nate Cunningham struck out four in five innings, but allowed seven of the nine BG runs.

The two sides will meet for Game 2 on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Warren Central High School, part of a District 14 doubleheader. Central and South Warren begin its series following the conclusion of Purples-Gators.

Bowling Green scored the game’s first run on a Greenwood error in the top of the first before Hicks’ RBI single evened the score in the bottom half.

After Bryce Deglow reached on a single, Dennis’ first deep ball put the Purples back in front in the ensuing inning. A four-run third by Bowling Green put it up 7-1.

The Gators crossed the plate on a BG error in the fifth, but just before Bowling Green added runs on a fielder’s choice and Dennis’ second bomb made it 9-2 in the seventh.

Blair’s RBI single scored Dell Henk, who led off with a single into right field, to score Greenwood’s third run, but it still trailed by six and fell in the series opener.
