Bowling Green captures Meijer Classic title with win over Franklin-Simpson

Bowling Green’s boys’ basketball team has now won 32-straight games against Region 4 opponents.

In the Meijer Holiday Classic championship game on Friday evening at Bowling Green High School, the Purples (10-3 overall) used a big third-quarter run to pull away from Franklin-Simpson in front of an highly-energetic crowd that filled both sides of the gym, winning 55-42.

Eighth grade point guard Zion Harmon led BG with 19 points, including a 10-of-10 mark from the free-throw line and senior forward Terry Taylor scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds while fellow senior forward Kyran Jones finished with a showing out 10 points and 8 boards.

In their tough loss, the Wildcats (9-3 overall), were carried by senior guard Tavin Lovan’s 20 points and 7 rebounds.

The Purples return to action on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. on the road at Barren County while the Wildcats travel to Warren Central on Tuesday for a 7:15 p.m. tipoff against the Dragons.

Taylor made a free-throw and Harmon scored seven-straight to give Bowling Green an early 8-2 lead, but Franklin-Simpson responded by scoring six-straight to tie it up. The Purples regained their lead by scoring five-straight and led 15-11, but once again, the Wildcats answered with an 8-0 run to lead 19-15.

Taylor scored twice in a roll and made the two teams be knotted at halftime, 23-23.

Franklin scored first to begin the second half, but then went almost five minutes without a point and that helped the Purples build a 10-0 run and hold a 33-25 lead. BG increased its lead to 45-33 early in the fourth after two of Harmon’s ten-made foul shots.

The Wildcats were able to cut their deficit to nine, but would never be able to pull back in front, as FS fell short to the Purples.

Franklin-Simpson and Bowling Green will meet again on Jan. 23 at FSHS in what should be another intriguing matchup.
