Bowling Green outlasts Greenwood at The Swamp

Bowling Green traveled to Greenwood for a key District 14 showdown on Monday night.

After falling 66-59 to the Purples back on Dec. 13, the Gators looked to find a way to capture the season’s second meeting, but BG’s big three kept them from doing that.

Taylor scored 25 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, Deangelo Wilson added 21 points and Zion Harmon finished with 18 points to help Bowling Green avoided an upset, as it outlasted Greenwood 79-71 in overtime.

In their loss, the Gators’ were carried by Dawson Crump, who poured in a game-high 38 points.

Bowling Green hits the floor again on Tuesday night at home against Owensboro at 7:30 p.m. while Greenwood hosts Allen County-Scottsville also on Tuesday with tipoff slated for the same time.

Greenwood came out of the gates fired up and that led them to a 16-9 lead over Bowling Green after the opening quarter.

Trailing by seven, the Purples came out ready to make a run in the second – and that’s what they did. At the 4:10 mark of the period, Bowling Green was on a 13-0 run and held a three-point advantage at 24-21. Taylor was up to 9 points and 7 rebounds.

The Gators went on to outscore BG 9-4 throughout the remainder of the quarter and went into the locker room down just two thanks to a Crump three-pointer just before the buzzer, as the scoreboard read 30-28. Taylor had 9 points and 10 rebounds for the Purples while Roberts was carrying Greenwood with 11 points.

The two sides continued to trade baskets in the second half, as Bowling Green had a slim 42-41 lead with 2:31 left in the third. The Purples closed the quarter with a 9-0 run – all Deangelo Wilson threes – to hold a 51-47 advantage entering the final period.

In the fourth, the large crowd at The Swamp was up on its feet and cheering on their respected squads. The scoreboard read 60-56 in Bowling Green’s favor with 3:00 left and then Greenwood fired back and took a 61-60 lead with 1:15 left to tick.

The Gators then went up 62-60 with 23 seconds remaining, but the Purples would tie it up and force an overtime period.

D.G. Sherrill’s club controlled the extra minutes from start to finish, as Bowling Green outscored Greenwood 17-9 in the four-minute to hold off the Gators and avoid an upset.
