Part One — Baseball and Softball

By Perry Swack

The KHSAA dead period is alive and well as we enter into the month of July. For many coaches and athletes, it’s the only time off they will have all year. Before we dive into fall sports later this month, we wanted to recap an eventful spring around the Greater Bowling Green Area. Keep reading for some of the top headlines from baseball, softball, tennis, track & field, and lacrosse. It was another banner season for many of our area teams.

Baseball – Russell County wins second region title in three seasons against packed field

After reaching the state finals in 2022, the Russell County Lakers made it back to the state tournament after winning its second region championship in three seasons. The 16th District champions were led by Mayes Gosser and Trace Stringer at the plate. The junior Gosser led the team with 46 runs, 57 hits, 50 RBI, and a .426 batting average. The senior Stringer had 55 hits, 39 RBI, scored 43 runs, and batted .394. He also led the team on the mound with nearly 60 innings pitched, going 9-1 with a 2.62 ERA and 43 strikeouts. Three pitchers (Stringer, Austin Bartrug, and Lincoln Helm) combined for a record of 19-3. The Lakers overcame two regular-season losses to Warren East in the regular season to defeat them 12-3 in the region championship game and reach the state tournament.

The Raiders had a great season on the diamond, winning their first district title since arriving in the 15th District. Senior Maddox Tarrence led the way with 46 hits, third-best in the 4th Region. Greenwood won its first 14th District championship since 2013 behind one of the top pitching staffs in the state. Junior Nathan Howard paced the Gators with a record of 8-1 and 62 strikeouts to go along with a 1.62 ERA. Greenwood’s team ERA of 2.07 was among the state’s best. Elsewhere in the 14th District, Ethan Reynolds of South Warren had an outstanding season at the plate, ranking among the state’s best in hits (45), home runs (9), RBI (38), batting average (.455), and slugging percentage (.889).

Bowling Green missed the region tournament for the first time since 2017; however, the Purples started the season 16-0 and won nearly 30 games. Senior Ethan Madison led the way with 16 doubles, six home runs, 37 RBI, and a slugging percentage of .755. Jackson Idlett posted one of the top earned run averages in the state at 0.86 in over 40 innings of work. Drew Isenberg was right behind at 1.35 in over 50 innings on the mound. Idlett, Isenberg, and Max Buchanon combined for a record of 18-3. Franklin-Simpson won the 13th District for a second-straight season and reached the region semifinals.

Softball – South Warren reaches state semifinals for third time in program history

South Warren was considered the best softball team in the state of Kentucky for much of the 2024 season and came painstakingly close to appearing in the one game that has eluded the Lady Spartans: the state championship. Coach Kelly Reynolds’ club began the season 18-0 en route to a school-record 39 wins. Junior McLaine Hudson set the state record for hits in a season with 93, to go along with 81 runs, 67 RBI, 14 doubles, 22 home runs, and a batting average of .620. Kinleigh Russell and Hadley Borders also posted batting averages above .500 as Russell hit .598 with 55 runs and a team-best 21 doubles, while Borders scattered 60 hits, drew 32 walks, and hit .504. Layla Ogden knocked in 65 runs at the plate and went 20-0 with a 1.11 ERA on the mound. The sophomore struck out 144 batters in over 100 innings of work. Teammate Courtney Norwood went 16-3 with an ERA of 1.36, compiling 139 strikeouts and only 14 walks in 98 innings. The Lady Spartans will bring back virtually its entire team in 2025, making them an easy favorite to capture the elusive state title next spring.

Barren County had a banner year on the diamond as well. The Trojanettes reached only their third region title game in the last 25 years (2004, 2010) and nearly sprung the upset on the Lady Spartans in the region finale, before falling 4-2. Senior Katie Murphy led the way with a batting average of .570 with 65 hits, 64 runs, 59 RBI, 23 doubles, and seven home runs. Her slugging percentage of 1.044 was also among the state’s best. Freshman pitcher Shea Bogue went 22-4 on the mound in nearly 150 innings pitched with 76 strikeouts. Logan County won its fourth 13th District title in five seasons behind Emerson McKinnis’s 14 home runs and .536 batting average, while Clinton County captured its first 16th District championship since 2009. Three Lady Bulldogs tallied more than 50 hits as Lily Hickman (53), Lauren Winningham (51), and Lexi Messer (50) led the way.

Shea Bogue & the Trojanettes reached the region title game for the first time since 2010

Warren East and Greenwood were among the state leaders in various hitting categories, with the Lady Raiders’ Lydia Jones batting .488 with 61 hits, 43 runs, 43 RBI, and 15 doubles. Teammate Jordan Brooks tallied 57 hits to go along with a .460 batting average. Greenwood’s Cali Huff batted .447 with 46 hits, 47 RBI, 43 runs, and a whopping 16 home runs, while Savannah White hit .453 with 45 runs and 34 RBI.

LaRue County had accomplished plenty this season. After losing a strong senior class and fielding one of the youngest teams in the Region, they surprised everyone including themselves sometimes with an incredible performance winning the Region Tourney and advancing to the KHSAA State Baseball Tournament.

However, that season came to a thunderous end in round one at Legends Field yesterday afternoon. PRP overcame a slow start and pounded Hawks pitching for nine hits and 11-runs as they blew out a close game scoring in five of the seven innings they batted around in winning, 11-5.

LaRue County coach Kellen Lobb went to their ace Brayden Singleton, who was coming off the heels of his near perfect performance last week against Central Hardin and for at least the first two innings was able to hold the powerful Panthers at bay while the Hawks got two early runs off PRP starter Grayson Roll to lead 2-0 after one. The Panthers adjusted and tacked on a run in the top of the second and then put together five-runs in the third when they scored five times with Brayden Bruner’s three run shot being the biggest blow to take the lead, 6-2.

PRP continued to put on the pressure and scored three more times in the fourth inning while Roll continued to control the Hawks after their early explosion. Singleton was finally removed after throwing 89-pitches in four innings and Ayden Seidl was greeted with a home run by Asious Kavich to push the lead to 9-2 in the fifth.

The Panthers finished their scoring with another run in the sixth when a throwing error scored an unearned run to make it 11-2 until LaRue County strung some hits together in the seventh, the biggest shot was a triple by Ryan Hughes that scored Singleton, who reached on a fielding error and then the Hawks scored another unearned run to finish the scoring.

Softball- The Elizabethtown Softball team put together a 28-win season using a strong defense and the strength of their Superstar pitcher Taytum Spiers along with their timely hitting. The Lady Panthers were built on speed and defense, yet even though they were so dominate they never lost two straight during the season, they did have one big problem.

Bell’s Big Boom: Central Hardin had been a thorn in their side all season nabbing them with three losses, but fortunately for coach Jimmy Schmidt, that problem was taken care of by the other dominate team in the Regional Tournament, the LaRue County Lady Hawks. Although they didn’t have the pedigree of the Lady Bruins, coach Rocky Cundiff knew “The road through the Region goes through Central Hardin.” Cundiff needed a BIG game by his team and Isabelle Hayes gave him one. The Junior pitcher had been great all season as the Lady Hawks totaled 25-wins and against the powder blue Bruins, she got things started with a three-run homer in the first inning and added another RBI in the third as LaRue County put up 5-runs and Hayes did the rest on the circle as the Lady Hawks beat Central Hardin for the first time since 2005.

Walk Off WIN: Taylor County and Nelson County engaged in an extra inning thriller in the first round of the 5th Region Tournament. It was a wild contest where the Lady Cardinals looked to have it in hand until Taylor County tied things up in the sixth with two runs with two out. After that it was up to Hannah Gupton, who launched a shot to right field which cleared the wall for a walk off homer. Gupton’s blast came off Aubrey Robbins, who had pitched a fine game getting Nelson County out of several jams while throwing 117-pitches. Both Robbins and her counterpart Briley Edwards (who was removed after throwing her 100th pitch for Madelynn Yates) went at it in an old fashion pitching duel that only one would win in the end.

Making History: When Shaun Smith took the Banshee softball coaching job in 2012, the sport hadn’t been a major power player in the 5th Region. Since then, the Banshees have been in the Regional Tournament every year (not counting the lost 2020 season) except one. The closest they came to making a State Tournament appearance was 2022 season when they reached the semi-finals and lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to Elizabethtown. Senior pitcher Kaityn Cissell, much like Spiers was lights out much of the season and threw a gem against the other Cinderella team in LaRue County in a 2-1 semi-final come-from-behind win as Bethlehem reached the Region Final for the first time in the team’s history. This set up another classic matchup between Smith’s Banshees and Schmidt’s Lady Panthers with history repeating itself again.

Walking to Victory: Alyssa Philpot has had quite a season as Spiers’ catcher and the calming influence while helping to keep everything together directing the defense. Still, she seemed to be the most unlikely hero on a team which manufactories runs yet while Cissell was mowing the Lady Panthers down for much of the game, the first two batters reached base and then Cissell fielded a grounder, but chose not to attempt a throw to third for a force out loading the bases with no-outs. Up stepped Philpot, who worked a 3-2 count and then walked on ball-four forcing in the only run Spiers would need. That was all Spiers would need as she finished off a marvelous Region Tourney with three straight shutouts to her credit and a total of seven runs scored. On the other side of the circle, Cissell, who had threw two straight gems allowing just two runs and still came out on the wrong side of a 1-0 loss deserved a better fate.

Baseball- If the Softball Tourney was a bit more predictable, thanks to Central Hardin’s early exit in the first round, then the Regional at Green County to decide a baseball representative for State was even more up in the air. Much like it’s softball counterpart, there hadn’t been a repeat champion for a much longer time (say 2016).

Looking Good: Well at least for one round, the Central Hardin Bruins looked to be the favorite going into round one. They may have had a new coach (Steven Delabar), but on the field, they still looked like a team which wanted to be playing in Lexington in June. The Bruins had won the most games coming into the Tourney (29), they outscored their competition in the District Tourney (22-2) and had one of the top pitchers in the state (Zak Spurrier) and they looked pretty dominate in their first round win against another top team in Campbellsville (11-6). With the Hawks up next, it would be a stark contrast in teams.

Getting Better at just the RIGHT Time: While the Bruins were cruising along, the reigning Region Champs were having a little trouble adjusting to 2024. After winning 22-games last season, the Hawks were struggling at times after losing a strong senior class. True, they were young and at one point lost ten straight regular season games in a row finishing 14-17 going into District Tourney play. However something started to happen as the playoffs came along, the Hawks would win two straight including a 7-6 nailbiter in the District Final against Green County. Coach Kellen Lobb credits to turnaround to maturity and the recovery of sophomore catcher Ryan Hughes, who came back from an injury suffered during tournament play last August. Hughes is one of the team captains and his presence was a big part of their late success.

All Most Perfect: As an eighth grader, pitcher Brayden Singleton had such potential that Lobb started him in the Hawks KHSAA State Tournament opener against Whitney County. A year later, he was the best pitcher on the team (not to mention the top hitter as well), so when it came time to decide on who to send up against Central Hardin in Round two of the Region Tournament, Lobb didn’t hesitate to call on the freshman. What he hoped for was a good performance against a great Bruin batting lineup. What he got was near perfection. Through six innings, Singleton retired the first eighteen batters he faced, had a perfect game going into the seventh and was doing it throwing only 66-pitches and would end up with 14-strikeouts and NO walks. He lost his No-hitter with one out when Reece Cowley singled to right field but followed that retiring the next two batters with a flyball and a strikeout. LaRue County gave Singleton plenty of backup with four-runs in the first and then five more in the third in an 11-0 win. Was Lobb surprised by the freshman’s performance? “I was not surprised with Singleton’s performance. He works harder than any kid around and has the mentality that you will not beat him.”

Commander Revolution: If LaRue County’s surprising resurgence caught everyone by surprise, then Washington County had plenty of people in the 18th District scratching their heads as well. Although not necessarily a major power player in the Region Baseball universe, the Commanders have made some noise in the past, but going into their District Tourney, they were saddled with a 10-14-1 record. However, when all the dust settled, they were still standing and moving on to the Regionals after outscoring both Bardstown and Nelson County 22-4. A huge game by Beau Baker, who hit two homers led to a 5-4 win over Elizabethtown in round one, then Baker blasted another one against Taylor County in round two as Cole McLean threw a two-hit shutout while striking out 10-Cardinals. Washington County scored eight runs on just 4-hits as the Commanders reached the Region Finals for the first time in recent history.

15-Innings of Tension: If anyone thought the 5th Region baseball Final @ Green County would be a quick read then they were badly mistaken. A game which began about 6:00 didn’t end until nearly 10:30 as both Washington County and LaRue County refused to lose and it took 15-innings to decide a winner. Even after the Hawks finally put two-runs on the board in the top of the 15th to break a 2-2 tie, the Commanders didn’t go down easily. With one out, Dylan Mattingly singled, then after Camden Abell was hit by a hit, Andrew Mackin singled scoring Mattingly to make the score 4-3. But Beau Baker, who went hitless, but walked three times popped out to second and then Blandford struckout to end the game. It was Macklin, whose RBI single in the bottom of the 7th tied the score at 2-2. Washington County. LaRue County was able to break the tie in the top of the 15th when an error scored one run then a single by Cole Miller extended it to 4-2. Brady Skaggs got the win going 5-innings allowing just one run and struck out four Commanders. Lance Coulter got the loss for Washington County. It was certainly the longest Region Tourney game in recent history and the longest by innings including regular season since May 17th, 2014 when Nelson County beat Bethlehem 3-1 in 16-innings.

With district play heating up, we swing around the 4th Region and take a look at each baseball district and where it stands after the first round of games last week. Districts have adopted a home-and-home round robin schedule for the regular season. Most inter-district affairs are played on consecutive weeknights with each team hosting. A weekly schedule is listed below, in addition to the district standings. Today we look at the 15th and 16th District.

16th District Standings

Barren County 4-0

Warren East 2-2

April 30 at 5:30 – Warren East @ Allen County-Scottsville

Overview

Barren County sits atop the 15th District after sweeping Warren East and Allen County-Scottsville in consecutive weeks. Three players are batting above .400, led by Jordan Harris (.452), Sutton Hyde (.417), and JP Hyde (.414). The freshman Harris leads the Trojans with 28 hits and 19 RBI. Junior Joey Meyers is 5-0 on the mound with a 2.18 ERA and 32 strikeouts on the season. The righty threw a complete game in the opening victory over the Patriots, striking out seven and only allowing one run.

As for Allen County-Scottsville, Brantly Bray’s club is led by junior Eli Stamper. The multi-sport athlete leads the Patriots in batting average (.364) and hits (12). Senior Ayden Barrick has led the team in batting average at .391, hits with 25, RBI with 16, and home runs with three. However, Barrick has missed the last week of games for the Raiders. In his absence, players like Maddox Tarrence and Kavien Hinton have kept pace. Tarrence leads the team with 20 runs scored, while Hinton has logged 20 hits and is tied with Barrick with 16 runs knocked in. Matthew Escalera threw a complete game with five strikeouts and zero earned runs in WE’s 12-4 win over Glasgow on Monday.

Senior Zachary Poore leads the club in batting average (.404), RBI (17), home runs (3), and bases on balls (12). Senior third baseman Weston Caroll is batting .391 with 27 hits, 19 runs, and has seven doubles on the season. The Scotties play Barren County next week with an opportunity to improve their district seeding for the postseason.

16th District Standings

Russell County 6-0

Clinton County 1-1

Cumberland County 1-2

With district play heating up, we swing around the 4th Region and take a look at each baseball district and where it stands after the first round of games last week. Districts have adopted a home-and-home round robin schedule for the regular season. Most inter-district affairs are played on consecutive weeknights with each team hosting. A weekly schedule is listed below, in addition to the district standings. Today we look at the 13th and 14th District.

13th District Standings

Franklin-Simpson 2-0

Logan County 0-0

Todd County Central 0-2

Upcoming Schedule

Monday at 5:30 – Franklin-Simpson @ Logan County

Tuesday at 5:30 – Logan County @ Franklin-Simpson

Overview

The most important games of the 13th District season are being played this week as the Wildcats and Cougars take the field on Monday and Tuesday. The two programs have combined to win the last twelve district titles and have faced each other in the district championship every season dating back to 2013. At the plate, Franklin is led by junior Layne Alford, who is batting .419 and has drawn a team-high 19 walks. Senior Brevin Scott is having an outstanding season, batting .333 with a team-high 19 hits, 19 RBI, and is 3-1 on the mound with a 2.13 ERA in 26.1 innings to date.

Hungry to avenge their district championship loss to Franklin-Simpson, Logan County is led by longtime star Davin Yates. The senior has been terrorizing opposing pitchers since 2021 and is having another banner year. Yates is hitting .329 and leads the team in batting average, hits (23), RBI (21), doubles (6), and home runs (3). The Cougars’ success this week will likely be in tandem with Yates having a big day at the plate.

Although off this week in district play, four Todd County Central players are batting better than .333 on the season. Senior Zack Robinson leads the team with a .364 average and ten RBI, while junior Devin Schutt is hitting .348 with 16 hits, 12 runs, and three doubles. The Rebels are a perfect 51-for-51 on stolen base attempts in 2024.

14th District Standings

South Warren 2-0

Bowling Green 1-1

Greenwood 1-1

Warren Central 0-2

Upcoming Schedule

Monday at 6:00 – South Warren @ Bowling Green

Monday at 6:00 – Warren Central @ Greenwood

Tuesday at 6:00 – Bowling Green @ South Warren

Tuesday at 6:00 – Greenwood at Warren Central

Overview

Bowling Green and South Warren will take to the diamond this week in what is a rematch of last season’s 14th District and 4th Region Tournament. The Purples defeated the Spartans in the district finale, before being upended by South in the region title game. BG has been on a tear to start 2024, as their 19-2 record will showcase. Junior Evan Schallert is having a breakout season in the leadoff spot, batting .423 with 26 runs, 22 hits, and 16 stolen bases through the season’s opening month. Sophomore Drew Isenberg has been “lights out” on the mound, amassing a 6-0 record in six starts with 29 strikeouts and a 0.49 ERA on the season.

To date, South Warren has had its fair share of ups and downs. The Spartans won seven of their first eight games, before dropping eight of their next ten. Chris Gage’s club has won three of four now and hope to continue the trend against their crosstown rivals. There are few hitters in the state who have been as hot as Ethan Reynolds. The junior is batting a whopping .491 and leads the team in nearly every batting category with 23 runs, 28 hits, 29 RBI, nine doubles, and five home runs. Fellow junior Mikey Coradini is 5-1 on the mound with 21 strikeouts and a 1.40 ERA in six starts for the Spartans.
The Gators and Dragons will battle across town, as each team looks to build some momentum heading into next week’s final round of district games. Greenwood junior Zachary Davis is batting .368 with 25 hits, 18 runs, and 12 RBI. Senior James Russell is 4-0 with a 2.13 ERA and has struck out 21 batters in nine appearances (two starts). Senior infielder Drake Bowers leads the team with a .412 batting average. Warren Central has dropped seven games in a row entering the week; however, the Dragons hope to find success against the Gators. Seniors Blake Akin and Jacob Bealmear lead the team in batting average, hits, runs, and are a combined 30-for-30 on stolen base attempts this season.

It was a great night to be at Slugger field, as the Bats battled the Woo Sox to a 5-4 win. These teams showed why they are in contention. The Bats and Woo Sox went toe-to-toe for most of the night. Both teams experienced multiple deep shots to the wall, fielded by spectacular catches.

As the Bats trailed late in the 9th, It was Elly DeLaCruz who lit the night sky with a 437-foot shot, driving in 2 runs with his walk-off homer to win the game, 5-4. It is his 11th home run of the year.

DeLaCruz skill base is ever expanding and there is no question his time in Louisville will be limited. In the meantime, Bats fans are being treated to a true superstar in the making. He has energized both the team and fan base.

South Warren faces off with 14th Region champion Breathitt County on Friday afternoon

By Perry Swack

With a 7-3 win over Bowling Green in the region championship, South Warren won its fifth title in twelve seasons. Dating back to 2003, no other 4th Region program has been more successful than the Spartans and their five region titles. Coming into 2023, coach Chris Gage had to replace four of the team’s top five batters and two of the squad’s top pitchers from 2022. The Spartans didn’t blink going 5-1 in one of the state’s toughest districts. The club dropped the 14th District championship game, but rebounded to defeat Franklin-Simpson, Barren County, and Bowling Green en route to the championship.

It was mid-April and the Spartans had lost consecutive games for the second time this season. Losing 5-0 at home to Bowling Green had put South in an 0-1 hole in the district and a loss at BG the next night would put them two games behind the Purples in the standings. After collecting only four hits in the opening game, Coach Gage needed a strong showing from his bats. The Spartans found themselves down early but rallied with a five-run fourth inning to help blow the game open and win, 9-6. Senior Dalton Sisson went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI at the plate and pitched six innings allowing only six hits in the win.

The victory over the Purples propelled South to win their remaining five district games and clinch the all-important 1-seed in the district tournament. In the region semifinals against Barren County, the team again found their backs against the wall. Down 2-1 in the sixth with two outs, senior Andrew Milam laced a two-run double to give the Spartans the lead for good and into the region finale.

Against Bowling Green in the title game, South used some more sixth-inning magic to take over the game. Down 3-2, the Spartans put together five-straight hits that turned the game on its head and led to five runs as the program won its fifth region title since 2012.

Now the Spartans set their sights on a new goal – the state title. They will face off against 14th Region champion, Breathitt County (22-14), on Friday afternoon at 1:30 EST at the Counter Clocks Field in Lexington (former home of the Lexington Legends). A win over the Bobcats would move the Spartans into the quarterfinals against the 13th Region champion Whitley County (35-4) or the 5th Region champion, LaRue County (22-14). Should South Warren secure its first trip to the state semifinals, it would return to Lexington on June 9 for the semifinals and finals (June 10) at Kentucky Proud Park.

South Warren will have a send-off for the team on Thursday, June 1st at 8:30 AM CST at SWHS.

Photos by Dan Townsend

If you thought the LaRue County Hawks were a sure thing to be standing in the Winner’s Circle at the end of the 2023 5th Region Baseball Championship at the beginning of the Tournament play at Elizabethtown’s Ron Myers Field last Sunday, then you might want to have your crystal ball looked at by a repairman. Going into the first day of play on Sunday (the Hawks were scheduled to play Game One on Sunday), they would possibly be facing three teams (if they got past the first and second round) that defeated them (three were sound thrashings) and to make things even more dire, they lost the District Championship game to Green County.

So imagine the surprise, after all the dust cleared and the Hawks were hoisting the Region Winner’s trophy on a warm sunny evening last Wednesday after reliever Brady Skaggs came on in the seventh after Daniel Allen pitched six innings and retiring the last two Panther batters on fly balls.

The 6-4 victory may have been Hawk head coach Kellen Lobb’s first Region Title since he took over for Chase Greenwell after the 2019 season, but it carried plenty of the marvelous memories of their last Regional Championship way back in 2018 under coach Eric Allen.

Both had plenty of weird twists which I’ll go into a bit later, but for sure after dropping the District Final, LaRue County would be consigned to the Losers Bracket and would have to face a District winner in the first game at least. Imagine looking at that Region bracket and seeing Washington County, possibly Taylor County if they survived that one and then ending up playing Elizabethtown in the Championship game on their own home field.

So, LaRue County started their magical mystery tour through the gauntlet on Sunday and thanks to a complete seven inning pitching performance by Jameson LaRue (4-hits/12-K’s) and a couple of RBI’s by LaRue and Sean Rivera, the Hawks shutout the Commanders, 3-0.

Game Two was a bit tougher as Taylor County (who won a shootout against LaRue County back in March 14-12) not only put the pressure on early, but built a 3-0 lead on starter Brayden Singleton, but the CARDIAC HAWKS came right back in the third inning when Ryan Hughes hit a bases loaded double with two outs tying things up and setting the stage for a huge Hawk inning when they scored four runs in the fifth with two out highlighted by Allen’s RBI triple and Carson Childress’ RBI single to ballon the score to 7-3. However, the game was far from over even though Singleton settled down, but was bit for three more runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Luke Hayes and then an RBI hit by Austin Garrett. Another run made it 7-6, but after Skaggs entered in the seventh to close things out, a leadoff single by Taylor County was stranded as the Hawks survived another one.

If LaRue County’s guardian angel was still watching over them, the following evening would really be put to the test as they faced Elizabethtown for the Title and their former coach Chase Greenwell. Ironically, Greenwell did win a Region Championship in 2021 as the former Panther took over the Elizabethtown program and it was another test of endurance for the Hawks as they were beaten twice by the Panthers during the regular season, but this was the playoffs and they would need every edge they could muster.

With Daniel Allen getting the start for Lobb, Elizabethtown took a 1-0 lead when Austin Jennings reached on an error scoring Caleb Irwin. After the Hawks tied it up on Childress’s double in the bottom of the inning plating Brayden Singleton, the Panthers retook the lead in the third Ryder Gregory scored on a wild pitch.

Then like they did during the Region Tourney, the Hawks responded.

During every win-or-go home situation, there are several moments that define a team and a season for the winner. Maybe the ball bounces the right way or the batter hits the ball just an inch or two to the right for a double down the foul line instead of out of play.

For LaRue County, the bottom of the third was that moment.

Jaxson Thomas scored on Singleton’s single and then after Allen walked with the bases loaded to put the Hawks ahead for the first time at 3-2, Childress hit a sacrifice fly to score Lucas Evans to expand the lead to 4-2.

Then in the bottom of the fifth, Thomas hit a two out, two-run single to score both Childress and Allen and make it 6-2. That turned out to be a valuable two extra runs as things got interesting again as the Hawks kept their fans and themselves on edge during this rollercoaster ride of a season.

Daniel Allen, who struggled a bit during the first couple innings settled down, but with one aboard in the seventh inning, Carter Moberly sent him home on a cannon shot to make it 6-4. With Thomas’ extra runs now playing a huge role in the score, Lobb brought in Skaggs, who did what every fireman does in this situation which is put out fires. Skaggs retired the next batters on 10-pitches and the Hawks won.

When the Hawks stormed the field for the improbable celebration, it may have never dawned on them just how difficult it was what they achieved. Not only did they win three straight games, two in dramatic fashion, but they also won the Championship against a team which was playing very well themselves and on their home court. Although Eric Allen understood the importance of what the team did, Lobb was experiencing this as a head guy for the first time and both he and the team were ecstatic in their joy.

Ironically, in the other dugout, Chase Greenwell knows both sides of the story as he won the Regional Final in his first season as Panther head coach (2021) and the happiness it brings along with the problems of repeating as he has been in the last two Region Championship games as well. His Panthers will return plenty of starters next season and should be back.

Two who reveled in the celebration was Childress and Allen, who experienced the pain of losing the 5th Region Basketball Championship game just last March against Elizabethtown and finally getting to experience the winning side of it for the first time.

So, LaRue County will begin preparations for their first trip to Lexington’s Counter Clocks field for an early morning first pitch Friday at 10:00 against Whitley County. Looks like the city of Lexington better get ready for plenty of Blue and White there as the Hawks are looking forward to hopefully a long stay and they’ll find out if their guardian angel is still on duty then.

Building the perfect Rotation: A baseball coaches’ job during the regular season is to put together a rotation for a short series and a long series if need be. That being said, a defense is just as important as dropped balls or errors can overturn that progress. One glaring problem during the Hawks five regular season losses to their Region foes was pitching. In the two Washington County losses (3/16 10-3 and 5/9 8-0), Lobb was forced to use 5-different pitchers in the first game and 4-different in the second one. Against Taylor County (3/27), he used 4-different pitchers and in the first Elizabethtown game (3/20), he used 4-pitchers also. The Regional playoffs was a different matter. Washington County (LaRue complete game win 114-pitches), Taylor County (Singleton 6-innings 111-p/Skaggs 1-inning 16-p) and Elizabethtown (Allen 6-innings 101-p/ Skaggs 1-inning 10-p). Getting the perfect rotation in a single elimination tourney can usually be hit and miss. For Lobb, it was definitely a home run.

Seems a lot like 2018: The similarities are a little striking. The Hawks last Region Title took longer than usual to finish up and it took seven days to do it. Game one against Elizabethtown was on a Monday at John Hardin and was postponed because of a rainstorm and finally finished up Friday evening at LaRue County. The last several games were finished Saturday afternoon at John Hardin and the Final Four was played that evening with the Championship game on Sunday afternoon. One more thing, The Hawks were nearly eliminated on Saturday night, but staged an amazing comeback to beat Campbellsville and then overcame two deficits against Central Hardin in the final to finally win.

2022 Champion – Barren County

Glasgow outscored opponents 23-10 en route to a second-consecutive 15th District championship. In the final against Barren County, Zachary Poore went five innings strong, striking out seven and only allowing two runs. Poore and Weston Carroll each hit two doubles and knocked in two runs apiece.

2022 – Glasgow over Barren County

2021 – Glasgow over Barren County

2019 – Allen County-Scottsville over Glasgow

2018 – Barren County over Monroe County

2017 – Barren County over Glasgow

Standings

Warren East 5-1

Glasgow 4-2

Barren County 2-4

Allen County-Scottsville 1-5

Schedule

May 15 @ 6:00pm – #1 Warren East vs. #4 Allen County-Scottsville

May 16 @ 6:00pm – #2 Glasgow vs. #3 Barren County

May 17 @ 6:00pm – Championship Game

Prediction

Warren East enters the 2023 postseason hungry to win its first region championship since 2011. The Raiders reached the region final in 2022 and are favored to reach the finale again this spring. However, the first tournament on the schedule will be the 15th District event. Powered by Maddox Tarrence and his .443 average, East is also favored to win the district title in its inaugural season after moving from the 14th. Tray Price (5 HR) and Chase Carver (4 HR) are a threat to go yard every at-bat, while Carver leads the team on the mound with 48 strikeouts (at the time of publication).

The two-time defending district champions will be hungry to make it three in a row as the only 15th district team that defeated Warren East in the regular season. Glasgow’s ace, Brayden Emmitt, was 6-2 with 45 strikeouts and a 1.90 ERA when this preview was published. The senior pitched a complete game with zero earned runs in the Scotties’ 3-1 win over East in late April. Weston Carroll is batting .383 with 32 runs batted in to lead GHS at the plate.

After splitting the season series with Glasgow, Barren County will be looking to spoil the Scotties’ chances at another district title. Sutton Hyde leads the team in hits, RBI, doubles, and home runs, along with a .361 batting average. Joey Meyers is 3-2 on the mound with a team-best 31 strikeouts and a 2.76 ERA.

Allen County-Scottsville’s Dusty Hayes is batting .333 with a team-leading 13 hits. Three Patriot pitchers have sub-3.50 ERAs, led by Eddy Chavez with a 2.80 ERA and only 12 earned runs on the season.

2017 – Franklin-Simpson over Logan County

Standings

Franklin-Simpson 5-1

Logan County 4-2

Russellville 0-6

Schedule

May 15 @ 5:30pm – #1 Franklin-Simpson vs. #4 Russellville

May 15 @ 7:30pm – #2 Logan County vs. #3 Todd County Central vs.

May 16 @ 6:00pm – Championship Game

Prediction

Franklin-Simpson and Logan County have qualified for the 4th Region Tournament in each of the last nine seasons. Seeding-wise, the Wildcats and Cougars are favored to do so for a tenth-consecutive year. However, everyone knows you still have to play the game. Todd County Central (12-13) will be looking to play spoiler after splitting the season series with Logan County (17-16). The Rebels are led by Gavyn Nolan and his .382 batting average. The senior has 26 runs, 25 RBI, five doubles, and three triples. The Cougars hope to win back-to-back district titles behind the dynamic bats of Davin Yates and Chance Sweeney. The junior duo are each batting well over .400 and have combined for 95 hits, 70 runs, 66 RBI, and nine home runs.

The 1-seed Wildcats utilize Brevin Scott both on the mound and at the plate. The junior is 6-1 in nine starts with a 1.84 ERA, while batting .322 with 28 hits and 19 RBI. Franklin-Simpson may be 12-19 overall, but Matt Wilhite’s club went 5-1 in district play and are peaking at the right time after winning four of six to close the regular season.

Champion – Franklin-Simpson
