Chuck’s This Month in Volleyball Sporting Times North
There is plenty of parity in the 5th Region, but the real race is in the 3rd Region.
After one month of play, both Meade County and Grayson County are in a tight race in the 3rd Region and it may get even tighter. Coming off a tough season in 2014, Grayson County Coach Nancy Mudd has a strong senior led team which hasn’t lost a game except during tournaments and had a strong finish during the Hillard Lyons Fall Classic in Elizabethtown.
The Lady Cougars are led by the talents of Bailey Martin, Arianna Filippone and Rebecca Higdon while their counterparts, the Meade County Lady Green Wave under Coach Morgan Benham have proven that they are too a force to be reckoned while building a strong 12-1 record and a classic five-set battle with the powerful Central Hardin Lady Bruins.
Meanwhile, Coach Bill Rineker, despite massive losses through graduation look to make another strong run in the 17th District with strong play from senior Allison Powers and would appear to be just one step ahead of rival Elizabethtown, whom they will face twice this month for the District lead.
An almost just as interesting race is going on in the 19th District where Bethlehem has stayed consistent this season even though they lost nine seniors from the previous season (most of them starters), but coach Eric Hoelhler has the Lady Banshees on the rise and have played everyone tough including a tight five-game loss to Central Hardin. Just down the road, the surprising Nelson County Lady Cardinals under Coach Keyata Harmon and their athletic front line of Kira Harmon. Both teams are on a collision course with two all important meetings to decide the Top Seed in the upcoming District Tournament.
