District 15 Tournaments: First-Round matchups preview

The 2017-18 regular season has drawn to a close, but the real season is only just beginning with the District 15 Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Tournaments slated to take place at Glasgow High School on Monday through Friday of this week.

Here’s a quick synopsis of the first-round matchups for both, as well as brackets, predictions and more information.

DISTRICT 15 GIRLS’ TOURNAMENT 

 

 

 

 

 

  • Mon., Feb. 19–No. 4 Monroe County (14-12, 1-5) vs. No. 1 Barren County (23-6, 5-1)–6 p.m.

Barren County enters the district tournament on a roll as the Trojanettes won seven straight and 14 out of their last 15 to close out the regular season. Monroe County ended its season with six wins in its final nine games, but the Lady Falcons suffered a 60-55 setback at Warren East on Thursday night to finish the regular season with a mark of 14-12.

The Trojanettes won both regular season meetings against Monroe County this season, winning 49-38 in Glasgow on Dec. 8 and 62-31 in Tompkinsvile on Jan. 11.

Barren is led by the one-two punch of junior Bailey Pedigo and Elizabeth Bertram, who pour in an average of 13.2 and 17.7 points per night, respectively.  Ashley Gearlds is the go-to player for the Lady Falcons, leading the team in both scoring and rebounding with 17.3 points and 6.8 boards per night.

The winner of the meeting will face the winner of the Glasgow and Allen County-Scottsville game on Thursday night for the championship.

Cameron’s Pick: Barren County 64, Monroe County 48

  • Mon, Feb. 19–No. 2 Glasgow (20-8, 3-3) vs. No. 3 Allen County-Scottsville (18-11, 3-3)

Both the Lady Scotties and Lady Patriots enter this epic showdown on a high note as both squads are winners of six straight.

The two teams split during the regular season, with Glasgow recording a 44-42 win in Scottsville on Jan. 2 before the Lady Patriots returned the favor with a 57-26 shellacking in Glasgow just 20 days later.

Glasgow is led by the duo of Anzley Adwell and Ashanti Gore–the pair scoring an average of 11.5 and 11.6 points per night. Gore also leads the team in rebounding with 8.3 boards per game.

Sarah Sutton leads the charge for ACS with 19.0 points and 8.2 rebounds per night, and she also leads the team in both field-goal and free-throw percentage at 54.7 and 83.3, respectively. Mason Towery is also a very valuable contributor for the Lady Patriots with 13.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per outing.

Cameron’s Pick: Allen County-Scottsville 54, Glasgow 52

DISTRICT 15 BOYS’ TOURNAMENT

 

  • Tues., Feb. 20–No. 1 Monroe County (18-9, 4-2) vs. No. 4 Allen County-Scottsville (9-18,1-5)–6 p.m.

Monroe County enters the district tournament as the top seed with a 4-2 mark in district play, but the Falcons failed to defend home court in a 63-60 loss to Allen County-Scottsville on Feb. 2 –marking the Patriots’ lone district win of the year.

The Falcons are led by sharpshooter Billy Michael Dyer, who pours in an average of 17.5 points per night thanks to 48-of-134 sniping from long range on the season. Junior Chandler Clements also provides a spark for Monroe with 17.4 points and a team-high 8.8 rebounds per game, and Clements leads the team in field-goal percentage with a a 55.8 percent shooting-clip on the season.

ACS is led by by junior standout Brett Rippy, who scores an average of 15.4 points per night and leads the team in every statistical category for shooting. Rippy dropped 24 points on the Falcons in the first meeting between the two schools this season.

The winner of this game will play the winner of the Barren County-Glasgow game for the district title on Friday night at 6 p.m.

Cameron’s Pick: Monroe County 71, Allen County-Scottsville 52

  • Wed., Feb. 21–No. 2 Barren County (19-10, 4-2) vs. No. 3 Glasgow (20-8, 3-3)

The rivalry between Barren County and Glasgow is already fierce, but those levels will be multiplied and intensified when the Trojans take on the host Scotties on Wednesday night.

The Trojans won both meetings against Glasgow this season, knocking off the Scotties 77-69 on the road and 60-53 at home.

Barren County is led by senior center Jared Coomer, who is currently averaging a double-double with 16.9 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. Will Bandy is the Trojans’ next-leading contributor with 11.4 points and 5.5 boards per night.

Glasgow has a very balanced attack that is led by the quartet of Kobe Brents, Jaden Franklin, Dalvin Smith and Nick Sorrell–the four players combining for 47.5 of the Scotties’ 65.4 points each night.

Cameron’s Pick: Barren County 62, Glasgow 59
