Preview

The Dragons nearly ended their 50-game losing streak last week, overcoming a 27-6 second-half deficit in a 39-36 loss to Monroe County. Quarterback Jace Carver had his best game of the season, completing 18 passes for 247 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. TySeam Day – one of the state’s top tacklers – had a day on the ground. The junior came into the contest with only five carries for 11 yards; however, he rushed 20 times against the Falcons for 105 yards, a touchdown, and scored on two-point conversions twice. His production on offense did not limit his defensive production as Day tallied 11 tackles. Leading wide receiver Omari Glover caught 7 passes for 110 yards and a score, while Demetrius Barnett snagged four catches for 80 yards and two touchdowns. Both will be dangerous in the passing game against the Knights. Central continues to improve on defense as well, allowing only 12 points in the second half of last week’s game – six points in the final 15 minutes. Four Dragons logged double-digit tackle totals against Monroe County as well – Day had 11, Dalton Farley tallied 12, while Connor Morris totaled 11, and Devin Poston finished with 10.

Marion County comes into its matchup with Warren Central looking to score its second victory of the season. The Knights are only averaging a shade over 10 points per game. Senior RB/LB Mason Brown is the team’s leading rusher and tackler. Brown has rushed for 171 yards on the season with three touchdowns, while also tallying 29 tackles to lead the Knight defense. Senior Lathan Hamilton is the team’s second-leading rusher (128 yards), leading receiver (165 yards), and leader in interceptions with two.

Prediction

Warren Central 42, Marion County 23

Sporting Times publisher Doug Thompson has been predicting a Warren Central victory over the last few weeks. His prediction has not yet come to fruition after cancellations and a close loss last week kept the Dragons out of the win column. However, this week he – and I – believe the streak will end.

Nine years ago – almost to the day – WKU entered a contest with Louisiana-Lafayette on an 18-game home losing streak. The Hilltoppers had struggled through countless close calls but had yet to get over the hump. But on that night, something changed. Quarterback Kawaun Jakes had his best game of the year, running back Bobby Rainey ran for over 200 yards, and tight end Jack Doyle caught seven passes for 106 yards.

I think Warren Central is going to have their WKU moment from 2011 this week against Marion County. If Jace Carver plays like Jakes, TySeam Day racks up 200 yards, and Omari Glover has a Jack Doyle-like performance, remember that you heard it here first. Well here, and from Doug Thompson.

What was the score of that WKU-ULL game nine years ago? 42-23. Book it.
