He’s already known for his exceptional baseball ability, but Davion Downey is showing that he can do it all on the diamond.
After hitting a two-run walkoff homerun to give the Warren East baseball team a 5-4 come-from-behind win in its series opener Tuesday against Bowling Green, the Baylor signee has now let it be known how solid he can be on the mound.
While just allowing one hit and two walks, Downey finished with 10 strikeouts in a complete game Wednesday for the Raiders, who defeated the Purples 3-0 to win their eighth-straight contest and claim the series victory over BG.
Dakota Campbell and Ty Colson each went 2-for-3 at the plate for East (14-4) while Downey, Dakota Basham and Chauncey Greer each finished with one hit each. In their loss, the Purples’ lone hit was courtesy of Trevor Dennis’ single in the top of the seventh inning.
The two clubs will meet again for the series finale Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Bowling Green High School.
Warren East scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the third on an errant pick-off throw by Bowling Green. With Basham on third base after Downey reached on a previous error to advance him, Basham watched a ball be overthrown to first and sprinted from his position to cross the plate to give the Raiders the 1-0 lead.
Greer’s perfectly-placed bunt plated Alford just before Greer scored on a Purples throwing error while stealing third, increasing East’s advantage to 3-0 entering the seventh.
Needing just three outs to seal the deal, Downey allowed his first hit of the night on Dennis’ single, but the pitcher would push it aside and retire the following Bowling Green batters, earning Warren East its first series win over the Purples since April 2014.
