Feggins ERA Begins with a VICTORY

The Howard Feggins era couldn’t have begun much better as he took the helm of Warren Central for the team’s first game of the 2014 season. Feggins is the ninth head coach at WCHS and brought with him a speed-oriented wide-open offense. The questions coming into the year weren’t whether the system could succeed, but how long it would take for the team to learn and execute it effectively. IMG_0674 (375x640)

Well, how does 54-16 look for a first effort?

The Dragons scored early and often, first through the air courtesy of a Chance Shanklin 35-yard connection to Malik Peele. Jensen Feggins helped his Highlands team win the 71-69 epic shootout over Central a season ago, but now he plays for his father and WCHS already knows what they have. Feggins caught several deep balls and a 2-point conversion attempt during the game and was basically impossible to cover in jump reception situations.

The no huddle made plenty of appearances and in most cases worked well, keeping the defense out of position and in a position of desperation to follow the football. LaDarius Mitchell might not be the tallest player on the field, but his lightning quickness from the slot led to a pair of TD catches from Shanklin. Colin Burnham did most of the work on the ground, chewing up broad chunks of yardage and finding the endzone in the second half.

Hopkinsville couldn’t find a consistent weapon against Feggins’ defense, which surrendered some runs up the middle but with the exception of one lapse late in the final quarter, gave up nothing through the air. Emotions were high and so were penalty totals, many of them of the procedural pre-snap variety expected during the first week of the season.

All in all a good night for Central on both sides of the football. They host Bourbon County next Friday at 6 PM. Full coverage all season continues on the Sporting Times Broadcast Network and through Dragon Nation.
