Football Playoff Previews: Quarterfinals

Entering the quarterfinals of the 2018 Kentucky high school football playoffs, three area teams remain in the hunt for state championships.

Here’s a complete look at each local regional final matchup, ranging from Class 5A to 2A:

Class 5A

Owensboro (10-2) at South Warren (12-0)

7 p.m. Friday

Breakdown: South Warren and Owensboro will meet for the first time on Friday in the quarterfinal round of the Class 5A playoffs … The winner will capture the 5A, Region 1 championship … The Spartans enter the contest with an undefeated 12-0 record … South Warren defeated Grayson County 55-21 last week in the second round … Running back Cameron Harrison rushed for 102 yards and three touchdowns, while quarterback Gavin Spurrier threw for 114 yards and a TD in the Spartans’ win … Owensboro earned a 28-21 win over Bowling Green in the second round and is riding an eight-game win streak … Quarterback Will Warren passed for 295 yards and four TDs in the Red Devils’ victory … The winner will advance to next Friday’s semifinals and meet the South Oldham-Fern Creek winner.

Class 4A

Breakdown: Franklin-Simpson and Madisonville-North Hopkins meet Friday in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A playoffs at Shadetree Stadium … The winner will capture the 4A, Region 1 championship … The defending state champion Wildcats defeated Logan County 55-19 last week in the second round … Running back Tre Bass rushed for 215 yards and four touchdowns, while running back Carlos McKinney finished with 134 yards and two TDs … The Maroons beat Hopkinsville 20-0 in the second round and are riding an eight-game win streak … Quarterback JD Gilbert passed for 119 yards and scored a rushing TD in the victory, while running back Jeriah Hightower ran for 61 yards and a score … The winner will advance to next Friday’s semifinals and meet the Moore-Taylor County winner.

Class 2A

Glasgow (11-1) at Walton-Verona (10-2)
