Football Playoff Previews: Second Round

Entering the second round of the 2018 Kentucky high school football playoffs, six area teams remain in the hunt for state championships.

Here’s a complete look at each local second round matchup, ranging from Class 5A to A:

Class 5A

Bowling Green (9-2) at Owensboro (9-2)

7 p.m. Friday

Last meeting: Bowling Green won 21-12 on Sept. 7, 2018

Breakdown: Friday’s meeting will mark the 80th all-time clash between Bowling Green and Owensboro … The Purples hold a slim 39-38-2 lead in the all-time series and have won 28 of the last 33 matchups – including 14 straight … Bowling Green beat Owensboro 21-12 in the regular season matchup Sept. 7 … Bowling Green defeated Christian County 29-7 last week in the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs … Quarterback Beau Buchanan threw for 160 yards and two touchdowns in the Purples’ win … Owensboro earned a 47-14 victory over Greenwood in the first round and is riding a seven-game win streak … Quarterback Will Warren passed for 185 yards and a pair of TDs in the Red Devils’ victory … The winner will advance to next Friday’s quarterfinals and meet the South Warren-Grayson County winner.

Grayson County (8-3) at South Warren (11-0)

Last meeting: South Warren won 41-7 on Sept. 14, 2018

Breakdown: South Warren has won two straight against Grayson County, including a 41-7 win in the regular season on Sept. 14 … The Spartans enter Friday’s contest with an undefeated 11-0 record … South Warren shutout Apollo 48-0 last week in the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs … Running back Cameron Harrison rushed for 105 yards and three touchdowns, while quarterback Gavin Spurrier threw for 106 yards and two TDs in the Spartans’ win … Grayson County earned a 54-35 victory over Graves County in the first round and is riding a four-game win streak … Running back Q Daryius McHenry ran for 357 yards and six TDs in the Cougars’ victory  …The winner will advance to next Friday’s quarterfinals and meet the Owensboro-Bowling Green winner.

Class 4A

Logan County (10-1) at Franklin-Simpson (10-1)

Last meeting: Franklin-Simpson won 55-6 on Sept. 5, 2014

Breakdown: Franklin-Simpson and Logan County haven’t met since 2014 … Both teams enter Friday’s contest with 10-1 records … The Wildcats shutout Calloway County 41-0 last week in the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs … Quarterback Luke Richardson completed 4-of-6 passes for 45 yards and three touchdowns in Franklin-Simpson’s win, while running back Tre Bass rushed for 105 yards and a TD on six carries … Running back Carlos McKinney finished with 59 yards and a TD on four carries … The Cougars defeated Allen County-Scottsville 42-3 in the first round behind 113 yards and two touchdowns from running back Gary Hardy … The winner will advance to next Friday’s quarterfinals and meet the Madisonville-North Hopkins-Hopkinsville winner.

Class 2A

Carroll County (7-4) at Glasgow (10-1)

Breakdown: Glasgow and Carroll County will meet for the first time on Friday in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs … The Scotties defeated Owen County 54-6 last week in the opening round … Quarterback Tanner Abernathy completed 6 of 8 passes for 107 yards and four touchdowns in Glasgow’s win, while running back Nick Mitchell rushed for 120 yards and two TDs … Wide receiver Jaden Franklin finished with three catches for 46 yards and a pair of scores … Carroll County beat Green County 35-6 in the first round … Quarterback Andre Mumphrey recorded 187 all-purpose yards and three TDs in the Panthers’ victory … The winner will advance to next Friday’s quarterfinals and meet the Walton-Verona-Monroe County winner.

Monroe County (4-7) at Walton-Verona (9-2)

7:30 p.m. Friday

Bearcat Stadium

Last meeting: First meeting

Breakdown: Monroe County and Walton-Verona will meet for the first time on Friday in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs … The Falcons defeated Gallatin County 58-6 last week in the opening round … Quarterback Gabe Henson threw for 95 yards and three touchdowns in the Falcons’ win, while running back Jamison Geralds rushed for 86 yards and two TDs … Walton-Verona beat Metcalfe County 41-8 in the first round … Quarterback Garrett Jones passed for 98 yards and two TDs in the Bearcats’ victory … The winner will advance to next Friday’s quarterfinals and meet the Glasgow-Carroll County winner.

Class A

Russellville (5-6) at Campbellsville (9-1)

7 p.m. Friday

Eagle Stadium

Last meeting: Russellville lost 50-26 in the playoffs on Nov. 10, 2017

Breakdown: Russellville and Campbellsville meet in the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season on Friday in the second round of the Class A playoffs … The Panthers lost to the Eagles 50-26 last year in the second round … Russellville defeated Fort Knox 35-14 last week in the opening round … Quarterback Jacob Naylor completed 7-of-13 passes for 84 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 130 yards on 20 carries in the Panthers’ win … Wide receiver Lennon Ries reeled in three receptions for 54 yards and a pair of TDs … Campbellsville earned a first round bye and didn’t play last week … The winner will advance to next Friday’s quarterfinals and meet the Crittenden County-Bethlehem winner.
