GLASGOW — The Wildcat offense ran amok on Friday evening, pounding the rock for 471 yards on the ground as Franklin-Simpson rolled to a 35-19 win over Glasgow.
Junior running back Tre Bass led the charge for the Wildcats, running wild for 205 yards and three touchdowns on just four carries in the first half.
“I really need to thank my offensive line,” Bass said. “The blocking was there. They gave me the chance to make big plays and I took advantage of that.”
Holding on to a 21-19 lead at halftime, Franklin-Simpson’s defense pitched a shutout in the second half, holding the Scotties (4-2) to just 25 total yards after making halftime adjustments in order to contain playmaker Dalvin Smith.
“[Dalvin] is such a tremendous athlete in that he can hurt you through the air or on the ground,” Franklin-Simpson head coach Doug Preston said. “We critiqued some things at halftime to take away some of the running lanes that he and the other running backs had and we kind of took control from there.”
Both teams traded a pair of punts to start the game before Selverio Rescontellio broke off a 28-yard run to set up his own two-yard scamper to put Glasgow on the board first late in the first quarter.
The Scotties’ lead wouldn’t last long. On the next play from scrimmage, Bass broke away for a 67-yard touchdown run to even the score at 7-7.
With 9:05 to go in the second quarter, the Scotties again found pay dirt as Dalvin Smith scampered in from five yards out. After a missed extra point, Glasgow led the Wildcats 13-7.
Like clockwork, Franklin-Simpson responded on the first play of the ensuing possession when Bass broke off another long touchdown run, this time from 58 yards out to put the Wildcats up 14-13.
“I thought we did a pretty good job in the first half on both sides of the ball, but [Bass] really hurt us in the first half,” Glasgow head coach Jeff Garmon said. “They hurt us a couple of times with the same play, and the rest was just adjustments that we need to make fundamentally.”
On the next possession, Smith attempted a heave to Griffin Murphy, but was picked off by Franklin-Simpson’s Saul Brady at the Wildcat 28-yard line.
Seconds later, Bass struck yet again with a 72-yard touchdown run, putting the Wildcats up 21-13 on the Scotties.
Two plays later on Glasgow’s ensuing possession, Smith broke off for a 77-yard touchdown run of his own and the Scotties pulled within 21-19, but failed the two-point conversion.
The Wildcats had 304 yards as a team at the halftime break, including 291 rushing yards. Glasgow (3-3) had 209 total yard of their own at the intermission, including 80 rushing yards and two touchdowns from Smith.
Both teams again traded punts to begin the second half before Carlos McKinney’s 19-yard scamper put the Wildcats up 28-19 with 2:46 to go in the third quarter.
Franklin-Simpson spent most of the fourth quarter running the clock before Tedric Partinger’s 12-yard touchdown run iced the game at 35-19 with 2:11 to go.
Franklin Simpson finished with 484 total yards on the night as Bass carried the ball seven times for 241 yards and three scores. McKinney had 110 yards on 22 carries and a score.
Glasgow finished with 234 total yards on the evening as Smith ran the ball nine times for 96 yards and a score.
Franklin-Simpson will be back on the road next Friday as they travel to Allen County-Scottsville. Glasgow will hit the road to take on Green County.
