Gators play hard, but fall short in the 2nd half

The Gators were back at the swamp Friday night for senior night. This week’s opponent was the dangerous district powerhouse Bowling Green Purples. The winner takes the number one seed in the district, but both teams are guaranteed a home playoff game in two weeks. The game started off as many would not expect it to, with Greenwood scoring first off of Jackson Adam’s 1 yard touchdown run to make it 7-0.

The Purples would answer on their first offensive possession, as Jamele Carothers ran it in from 3 yards out to square the game at 7 with 2:06 left in the first quarter. The Gators would respond on their next possession with Adams once again running it in for a touchdown, this time from 10 yards out to make it 14-7. The dog fight would continue as the Purples responded with an 11 yard touchdown pass from Clark Payne to Jacob Yates to make it 14-14 with 5:04 to go in the half. A red zone mishap for Greenwood with 16 seconds left would keep the game tied at the half. The Purples would answer first with a 6 yard touchdown pass from Payne to Wilson to make it 21-14 Bowling Green. After Greenwood was unable to respond on their next couple of possessions, the Purples made them pay. Carothers rumbled for a 30 yard touchdown to increase the lead over the Gators to 28-14. Bowling Green’s defense would stand strong and continue to keep the Gators scoreless in the second half.

Carothers would score his third rushing touchdown of the game from 3 yards out to make it 35-14 Purples. Bowling Green would score again after a Gators turnover on downs with Payne hitting Wilson with a 27 yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 42-14. After Adams threw an interception on the Gators next possession, the Purples made them pay with a Jacob Yates 10 yard touchdown run to increase the lead to 49-14. Greenwood would not respond again as the final score would be set in the Purples favor at 49-14. The Bluegrass Cellular Player of the Game goes to Jackson Adams with 33 carries for 158 yards and two touchdowns. The Gators move to 7-2 on the season and 2-1 in the district. With the loss Greenwood secured the number two seed in the district and a home playoff game in two weeks. The Gators travel to the newly renovated field at Warren Central next week for the final regular season game.
