Gators Route Raiders in Season Opener

The Greenwood Gators picked up right where left off at the end of their 9-3 run in 2015. The Gators defeated the Raiders from Warren East 39-7 in the second ever “Possum Bowl.”

Greenwood opened their scoring accounts in 2016 on the very first play of the game. Warren East transfer Willie Reynolds picked up the opening kickoff and took it to the house for six. From that point on it was all Gators. The Greenwood crew scored five touchdowns in the first half, but couldn’t convert on an extra point and two two-point conversions. Jackson Adams, Malcolm Johnson (2), Reynolds (2) all scored in the first half, giving Greenwood a commanding 32-0 lead heading into the intermission.

The second half went a bit slower for the Gators offensively. Greenwood could only score one more touchdown, but the defense picked up the slack. The defense kept the Raiders scoreless up until the final possession of the game. Greer connected on a 45-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Satterfield to put Warren East on the board.

The Greenwood defense had the biggest question mark on it coming into the 2016 season, but the Gators showed heart against Warren East. The Gators forced four interceptions from the Warren East quarterback, Chauncey Greer. Malcolm Johnson, Dakota Ford, and Reed Slone all had a take away. The defense also produced some key stops on fourth down to halt a few threatening drives.

Greenwood heads down Scottsville road next week to face off against Allen County Scottsville. Listen to that game live on STBN at 7 p.m. with pregame starting at 6:45 p.m.
