Gators runaway with home opener

Greenwood hit the turf Friday night in their home opener against Allen County-Scottsville. This game started off much like last week’s Warren East game did; Greenwood got out in front in a hurry and it was all led by sophomore quarterback Jackson Adams. Adams put the Gators up 7-0 after a 7 yard touchdown run early in the first quarter. The Gators’ next possession he added another score, this time on an 83 yard touchdown burst. After the first quarter, Greenwood had the 14-0 advantage. The Gators did not waste much time in the second to tack on some more points, as kicker Tanner South made a 24 yard field goal to put Greenwood ahead of ACS 17-0 (his first field goal of the season). After some more great defensive possessions, the Gators got the ball back and mr. reliable Adams recorded his third rushing touchdown of the game; this time a 26 yard run to put Greenwood ahead of the Patriots 24-0 late in the second quarter. ACS would finally put some points on the board with 6 seconds left in the half, as quarterback Chase Wilson threw a strike to wide receiver Colton Cox for a 21 yard touchdown. They attempted a two point conversion and failed, so the Gators lead was 24-6 at the break. The third quarter was a scoreless one, as both teams had several sloppy penalties and possession changes. The fourth quarter started off like the first half did; Greenwood’s young stud of a quarterback Jackson Adams ran another one in from 20 yards out to give the Gators a 31-6 lead with 8:03 to play in the game. The Patriots defense stepped up and allowed their offense to answer back on their next two possessions, as Colton Cox had touchdown receptions of 46 and 20 yards. ACS failed to convert on both of the two point conversions, making the score 31-18 with 2:24 left in the fourth. Adams put the icing on the cake for the Gators with a 55 yard touchdown run with 1:03 to go in the game. Greenwood won the home opener in the swamp by a final score of 38-18. The player of the game without question was Greenwood quarterback Jackson Adams. He rushed for 262 yards and 5 touchdowns. The Gators are now 2-0 and will travel to South Warren (2-0) next Friday night to face another crosstown rival in a tough showdown.
