And then there were four.
All the quarterfinal games in the girls’ Fourth Region Tournament have been played, and only four teams are left in the tourney—all of them vying for the spot in next week’s St. Elizabeth Healthcare/KHSAA Girls Sweet Sixteen Basketball Tournament at Northern Kentucky University’s BB&T Arena.
The regional tournament action continues on Friday night at E.A. Diddle Arena with a pair of semifinal games. 14th District runner-up Bowling Green (18-12) will take on 13th District champion Logan County (22-10) in the first game while 15th District runner-up Glasgow (22-9) will square off against 14th District champion South Warren (30-3). Here’s a quick preview of each of these games:
Bowling Green vs. Logan County, 6 p.m.
Bowling Green head coach Calvin Head and Logan County head coach Finley Baird are well-acquainted with one another.
Head strolled the sidelines at Logan County’s crosstown rival Russellville for three seasons up until this year, and the two coaches will go head-to-head against each other yet again on Friday night.
The two teams have already met this season, with Bowling Green recording a 69-47 victory in Russellville back on Feb. 13.
Even though her team fell short by 22 points the first time around, Baird believes that her Lady Cougars will be ready for this meeting with the Lady Purples.
“My young ladies are ready to get after it,” Baird said. “Having played them once we know what we have to do to step up. The big thing is we have to take care of the ball and not get flustered. If we give it, we should be able to take it.”
Logan County is led by sophomore Kennedy Nichols with 12.7 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. But the Lady Cougars saw great production from the twin sophomore duo of Paige and Peyton Vanzant, the pair combining for 42 points in the 69-57 victory over Metcalfe County on Monday night.
Bowling Green is led by all-region player Keely Morrow with 23 points per game, and the senior scored 13 points in the Lady Purples’ 58-43 win over Barren County in the first round.
Glasgow vs. South Warren, 8 p.m.
Glasgow continues to turn heads with a 22-9 record and 16 wins in Region Four play. The Lady Scotties advanced with a 44-41 over Russell County on Tuesday night.
“It’s about us and taking care of your own this time of year,” Glasgow head coach Justin Stinson said. “We’re playing great basketball right now, and we just want to keep it rolling.”
Glasgow is led by the duo of Ashanti Gore and Anzley Adwell leads by10.9 points and 11.6 points, respectively, per night.
The Lady Scotties will have their hands fall with South Warren, who currently has the best record in the region at 30-3, and the Spartans have not lost a Region Four game this year. The Spartans advanced with a 63-25 victory over Todd County Central on Tuesday night.
South Warren is led by senior Amaya Lasley (16.6 PPG) and junior Natalie Pierce (13.3 PPG). Senior Jordan McDonald also pours in 10.8 points per night for the Spartans.
