Glasgow escapes with overtime win at Barren County

GLASGOW — When Barren County junior Mallory Pedigo calmly stepped to the line and nailed two free throws with 0.3 seconds left to force overtime, it looked as though it would be hard for Glasgow to bounce back after the Lady Scotties blew a four-point lead with just 5.4 seconds left in regulation.

But the Lady Scotties showed that they had grit and determination.

Glasgow ended the game with four unanswered points after Barren County scored the first two points of the overtime period, and the Lady Scotties escaped with a 41-39 victory over the Trojanettes on Friday night — handing Barren County its first district loss of the season and first loss in regional play in ten games.

“I just told our kids we want to be mentally tough,” Glasgow coach Justin Stinson said. “We want to be mentally tough, we want to be physically tough and we want to just keep fighting.”

Glasgow (14-5, 4-2 District 15) led by four with 5.4 seconds left after Anzley Adwell had grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed free throw and went to the line and tacked on one point to seemingly put the game out of reach.

But Barren County was not fazed.

The Trojanettes immediately came down the floor and Eve Jackson banked in a 3-pointer from the top of the key with two seconds left to make it a one-point game again. The Trojanettes (16-6, 5-1) quickly fouled on the inbounds pass, sending Glasgow’s Kaylyn Hale to the line for two shots.

Hale made the first and missed the second, and Pedigo grabbed the rebound and was fouled in the backcourt before she went down to the opposite end of the floor and sank two free throws to force overtime.

Jalynn Bush made two free throws to put Barren County in front 39-37 with two minutes left in overtime, but Glasgow tied it on a bucket by Kyeden Hughes before Amanda Lee made the go-ahead basket with 20 seconds remaining.

Jackson attempted a shot from the left wing for the win, but it was off the mark and ricocheted out-of-bounds to the Lady Scotties—who simply just ran the final second off the clock.

“The biggest thing was how were we going to recover,” Stinson said. “Because that was a mental mistake, that’s all that was. It was just one of those things where you got caught up and made a mental error. So, I asked the kids ‘When we were down 13 in the late third quarter, would you have taken overtime?’ They said of course they would have. I thought our kids got composed and did a nice job.”

Glasgow struggled for much of the night and trailed 26-13 late in the third quarter due to poor shooting from the field. The Lady Scotties were 4-of-17 from the field in the first half but made 8-of-13 attempts from the field in the second half and overtime to secure the victory.

“We took all those same shots in the first half…they just bounced off,” Stinson said. “We got some of them to fall in the second half.”

The Lady Scotties crawled back into the game by heating up from the field as well as by getting numerous offensive rebounds. Glasgow finished with nine offensive boards—many coming in the fourth quarter and overtime.

“They were making shots and we weren’t,” Barren County coach Piper Lindsey said. “We were also giving them second and third chances. When you give a team second and third chances…it’s not going to be good.”

But while it was a tough loss, Lindsey still views the setback as a positive way for her team to build and get better.

“We came back and we fought until the very end,” Lindsey said. “I told them we have to focus on the little things like boxing out. We have to take care of the basketball. We didn’t make shots (Friday night). It is tough to win when you don’t make shots, and we just have to continue to fight and get better.”

Bailey Pedigo led Barren County in the loss with 13 points while Mallory Pedigo had 10. Adwell led Glasgow with 17 points, and Kayla Bradley tallied six.

Barren County will look to return to the winning path on the road at Todd County Central on Saturday night while Glasgow will look to continue its winning streak at Warren East.
