Gott to Lofton Scores Six and Fourty-Seven in OT

It’s always a good game when the Purples and Tigers lock up on the gridiron.  Bowling Green opened up the El this season with a doozy of a matchup against St. X.  Defense was the name of the game in this one, and it would come down to the very end to figure out who would win this one.BG2

In the first half, the defense dominated, as each team crossed the 50 only one time.  The Purples were able to force a couple of turnovers to keep the Tigers off the board, while the offense struggled to find a foothold in the run game.  Bowling Green opened up the second half going no huddle, and were able to move the ball down the field until St. X stood them up on a fourth and short opportunity.  We continued to go back and forth with no points on the board, as BG was able to force another turnover to keep St. X away from paydirt, and at the end of three, we were still tied at zeroes.

It got dicey for the Purples in the final minute of the fourth quarter, when a punt from Hunter Hanks goes off the side of his foot, setting up St X with seven seconds and two timeouts to set up a field goal.  Fortunately for BG, the Tigers ran all 7 seconds off the clock with their next play, and we went into Overtime.  This is the first time the Purples have gone into Overtime during their current win streak.  After failing to score on their first three downs, the Tigers would go for the 25 yard FG attempt, but missed wide to the right!  Bowling Green came out ready to score quickly, and two plays later Campbell Gott found Robbie Lofton on a diving catch under a defender for the lone touchdown of the game!  Purples keep the win streak alive at 47!

Purples QB Campbell Gott threw for 169 yards, going 23 for 38 with one pick and the decisive TD in OT.  Jacob Yates rushed for 63 yards on 19 carries. The receiving core for the Purples were active with five different Purples on the receiving end led by senior Cameron Wallace who pulled in 9 catches for 70 yards.

We hit the road next week, taking on Owensboro.  Make sure to catch this matchup between two classic rivals right here on PurplesNation.com!
