Greenwood seemed to love the rainy night on Tuesday evening, pounding out 10 runs on nine hits after a third-inning rain delay on their way to an 11-1 win in a series opener over Warren Central, extending their winning streak to six games.
The Gators (11-9) got on the board early in the first inning when a passed ball at home brought in a run by courtesy runner Reed Slone.
However, the Dragons (0-17) battled back with solid pitching over the next two innings to hold the Gators at the 1-0 lead through the bottom of the third inning, when a lightning delay caused play to be halted for about 50 minutes.
After the tarp came off of the field, the runs piled on to the board for Greenwood.
In the bottom of the 4th inning, Slone managed to steal home again on another passed ball while a double by Adam Schneller brought in two more runs, stretching the Gator lead to 4-0.
Central finally got on the board in the top of the 5th inning when a ground out to first by Jordan Miller allowed courtesy runner Xavion Rigsby to score from third, cutting the lead to 4-1.
Greenwood, though, continued to pour on in the bottom of the fifth inning as hits by Jack Blair, John Hicks, and Addison Harris brought in five more runs for the Gators, expanding the lead to 9-1.
After the Dragons got nothing out of the top of the sixth inning, Mac Ausbrooks reached on an error at third base, which brought in two more runs to put the mercy rule into effect.
Junior pitcher Nate Cunningham allowed one hit and one unearned run in a complete game for the Gators.
Greenwood and Warren Central will meet for the second game of the series tomorrow, Wednesday the 19th, at Warren East High School. First pitch is set for 5:00. The game will be followed by a matchup between Warren East and Bowling Green, a series in which Warren East leads 1-0.
