Greenwood defeats Bowling Green to win District Title

Rebounding from two difficult losses to a rival is difficult, but the Greenwood Gators found a way. Down 2-0 to the Bowling Green Purples, the Gators came back to win 3-2 and win the district tournament.

The win for the Gators was not easily done. BGHS scored twice in a two minute span to push the lead to 2-1 going into the half. Greenwood needed to respond quickly, and that’s exactly what they did. In the 65th minute, GHS senior Dylan Dewitt netted a goal to tie the game at two. The Gators received a clutch goal in the 72nd minute from senior Edin Hasanovic to put Greenwood in front for good. With the 3-2 victory of the Purples, the Gators advanced to their first regional tournament since 2011.

Greenwood’s win did much more than secure the district tournament title, it was their first win over Bowling Green in 2013. The Purples won both games against GHS in the regular season. The Gators’ win avenged both of those losses, as well as the difficult loss last year in the district tournament to South Warren. The Gators will continue their march to the state tournament next week in the regional tournament. Greenwood has had extreme success in regions, winning four titles since 2007.
