Warren East and Greenwood squared off for the second time on the season on Friday night on the North side of Warren County.
The Gators, who defeated the Raiders 78-50 at Greenwood High School back on Jan. 13, entered the second meeting of the year after winning 71-57 on Jan. 21 at Glasgow and were riding a two-game win-streak. Warren East returned home following an 86-80 defeat at Edmonson County on Tuesday and looked to snap a five-game skid.
Thanks to a stellar performance from Chris Agro, who scored 18 points and grabbed 5 rebounds, the Gators (14-9) edged the Raiders (10-9), winning 69-66 in front of a packed crowd at Raider Gym for Warren East’s homecoming.
Along with Agro’s big outing, Dawson Crump dropped 16 points and pulled down 8 rebounds while Alex Fee added a production of 12 points and 15 rebounds. In its loss, Trequon Patterson carried the load for Warren East with 26 points and 4 rebounds on the night.
The Raiders return to action on Saturday evening at home against Glasgow at 7:30 p.m. while the Gators travel to Cumberland County on Saturday afternoon for a 5 p.m. tipoff.
Warren East and Greenwood traded baskets all throughout the first quarter, as the Gators had a slim 20-18 lead after eight minutes of action. At the time, Jack Roberts already had 7 points for Greenwood, while Patterson was leading the Raiders with 6 points.
East came out fired up in the second and took a 23-22 lead at the 5:55 mark of the period. The Raiders went on to outscore the Gators 17-7 in the quarter and held an eight-point advantage at halftime, with the scoreboard reading 35-27. In the two opening quarters, Patrick Satterfield led Warren East with 11 points and two rebounds while Fee had tallied 8 points and 8 boards for Greenwood.
The Gators opened the third looking to comeback in the affair – and that’s exactly what they did – as they scored 25 points in the quarter and led by six at 47-41 with 1:59 left to play in the period. The scoreboard then moved to 50-43 after a Jack Roberts three-pointer. Heading into the final quarter of play, the Raiders trailed 52-47.
Warren East’s Patterson opened the fourth with back-to-back threes to cut its deficit to just one at 54-53 with 6:40 remaining. The senior guard continued to carry the Raiders in the final minutes, as an and-one conversion made the two sides knotted up at 62-62 with 2:31 left. The Gators then scored four-straight, courtesy of Agro and Crump, changing the scoreboard to 66-62.
The two clubs battled throughout the final pair of minutes, but Greenwood was able to edge Warren East.
